Hartwick Nabs First Win, 7-2, Over Utica

ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick men’s tennis got into the win column on Wednesday with a 7-2 rout of visiting Utica College in the Empire 8 opener for both programs. The Hawks swept all three doubles matches and took four of six in singles to earn the victory. Hartwick is now 1-3 overall.
           
Jeff Boyd (West Newbury, MA/Pentucket Regional) and Peter Dumas (Albany, NY/Colonie HS) won convincingly in first doubles. The duo defeated Utica’s Kenny Hadzic and Albert Phalen, 8-1.
           
Marcelo Navarro (San Juan, Puerto Rico/American Military Acad.) and Brian Redder (Marion, NY/Williamson Central) won by the same margin in the second slot. They downed Pioneers Sean Sherman and Mike Zaloom.
           
Ron Lambertson (Wawarsing, NY/Ellenville HS) and Bobby Amberson (Raeford, NC/Middletown HS) also scored a victory in third doubles. The pair won their match by a count of eight games to five.
           
Boyd, Navarro, Redder, and Amberson each won handily in their respective singles matches by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores. Redder’s win marks the first singles victory in his collegiate career.
           
Lambertson nearly came away with a win in sixth singles as he took Utica’s Daniel Fadden to the limit. Both players split the first two sets, 6-1, before Fadden emerged with a 10-8 win in the third-set super tie-breaker.
