Elmira, NY – Vice President of Athletics and Health Services, Pat Thompson, announced the appointment of James McGuire as Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach at Elmira College. “I am excited to have Coach McGuire join our staff,” said Thompson. “Along with a passion for his sport, he possesses the qualities we need to take our program to the next level.”
McGuire, a 2010 graduate of Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL, joins the Soaring Eagles after one season as the Assistant Men’s Tennis Coach at the University of Rochester. During his tenure with the Yellow Jackets he assisted the head coach with scouting, recruitment, player development drills, individual technique coaching, and revamping an off-season weight and conditioning program. McGuire also spent one year as the Volunteer Assistant Coach at Western Illinois University as he finished his undergraduate degree.
In addition to coaching at the college level, McGuire’s tennis experience includes working as an instructor at the Tennis Club of Rochester where he assisted with the operation of a summer day-camp for the Pee Wee, Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, Junior Varsity and Varsity level players. McGuire also served as a tennis instructor for three years at the U.S. Naval Academy.
McGuire played Division I tennis at two universities between 2006 and 2010. As a player at Western Illinois, he was the Team Captain for the 2009-2010 season, was the recipient of the Art Peterson Leadership Award in 2009, and attained the Fighter First award in 2008. He also was named to the Summit League All-Academic team in 2010. Prior to transferring to Western Illinois, McGuire also played at the University of Rhode Island where he recorded a team-best 19-10 singles record as a freshman. He also recorded 17 wins in doubles play as a sophomore.
“I am thankful for the opportunity Elmira College has presented me”, McGuire said. “I am looking forward to begin working with the team for the upcoming fall season.”
