St. John Fisher Men's Golf Qualifies for Final Two Rounds of NCAA Championship
The St. John Fisher College men’s golf team made the cut for the final two rounds of the NCAA Division III Championship, shooting 596 (+20) after the first two days, including clutch performances for a 294 (+6) on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL. Fisher’s 596 is tied for fifth best in the Championship, trailing leader Oglethorpe University by 19 strokes. The Cardinals are just a stroke out of third place and five out of second.
Thad Wier again turned in the Cardinals best round, shooting a 71 (-1) making him even for the tournament thus far.
Wier’s even first two rounds are good enough for sole possession of sixth place in the NCAA Championship, trailing leader Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe University by five strokes. The sophomore entered the day tied for 20th place, but quickly moved as high as third, finishing 14 spots better than the previous day.
Tyler McArdell battled all day long and came up with some clutch shots down the stretch, making birdie on holes 17 and 18, giving Fisher a good momentum heading into the third round as his teammates watched him sink a birdie putt emphasized with a fist pump on the par-4 18th. McArdell was as many as plus two on the day, but birdies on 5, 14, 17 and 18 allowed him to finish with a 72 (E) and a two round total of 148 (+4). The senior is now tied for 24th in the field, moving up 33 spots as he entered the day tied for 57th place.
John Gerber was solid again on day two, but this time he fought through until the end, not allowing a late round drop-off. Gerber was plus three most of day one but gave away four strokes over the last four holes to turn in a 79 (+7). In round two, Gerber was even as late as the 10th hole, after a birdie on the par-5 10th, and finished the day with a 74 (+2).
Chris Blyth had trouble on the front nine, turning in a 40 (+5) at the turn, but found his consistent ways on the backside, shooting an even-par 37. The freshman also ended on a good note, sinking a 15-foot putt on 18 in front of a pair of his teammates for birdie.
Thursday’s pairings and tee times have yet to be release but will be posted with a link as soon as they are made available.
