The St. John Fisher College men’s golf team shot a 303 (+15) on day three of the NCAA Division III Championship in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL at the Mission Inn Resort. Fisher started at No. 10 of the El Campeon course, and was led by senior Tyler McArdell, who turned in his best performance of the Championship on Thursday afternoon.

The 303 Thursday afternoon puts the Cardinals at +35 for the Championship, tying them with Wittenberg University for seventh place. Oglethorpe University, who is hosting the event, still sits in first place at plus three, with its next closest competitor sitting 16 strokes behind.

McArdell was minus two through the first eight holes before bogeying No. 18 to finish his front nine at 36 (-1). The Baldwinsville native then traded bogeys and birdies for the first four holes of his back nine, before making par the rest of the way. McArdell is now plus three for the tournament, putting him in a four-way tie for sixth place, moving up 18 spots from Wednesday.

John Gerber turned in another consistent performance, finishing with a team second-best 76 (+4) on the day. The senior’s most impressive moment was on his 17th hole of the day at the par-3 eighth. On No. 8, the pin placement today was towards the front right. Coach Bob Simms was heard telling Gerber to just put his shot to the center of the green. Gerber sent a shot right towards the pin, begging the question of if he had enough club, which he did, sticking the shot to six inches for an easy birdie tap-in.

Gerber is now +13 for the tournament which has him tied for 48th place along with teammate Chris Blyth. Blyth shot a 78 (+6) on the day, dropping him for 40th place to 48th.

Also shooting a 78 today was Thad Wier, who entered the day tied for sixth place at even par for the tournament. Wier had trouble on his front nine, shooting 41 (+4) but battled all day long, scrambling between bogeys and birdies on the back nine to turn in a plus-two 37. Wier is now tied for 20th place entering the final day of competition.

Tee times and pairings will be announced later this evening for the fourth and final round.
