ECAC Athletes-of-the-Week - Sept. 11, 2012
The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its Athletes-of-the-Week Tuesday afternoon. Student-athletes were honored for their performances during the week of Sept. 3-10. This week two student-athletes from Ithaca and one from Utica claimed honors.
The Metro/Upstate Men’s Cross Country Runner of the week was claimed by Ithaca senior David Geary. Geary ran a personal-record 8K time of 26:27.50 to start the 2012 season and place fourth out of 143 runners at the Oswego Invitational on Saturday. He was 18 seconds behind the lead runner and led the Bombers to a second-place finish (51 points) out of 12 teams as Rochester won the team title (17 points).
Ithaca freshman Joseph Dobbins has kicked his Rookie campaign off on the right foot. Dobbins, the Upstate Defensive Player of the Week, was part of a defensive unit that posted back-to-back shutouts in a tie at Rensselaer and a 1-0 win over #11 Muhlenberg. Dobbins scored the game-winning goal with a spectacular looping shot from 25 yards out near the left sideline that beat the goalkeeper and went in off the right post.
Utica’s Joe Giametta adds Northwest Defensive Player of the Week to his accolade list after earning the Empire 8 and Metropolitan New York Football Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week. Giametta led Utica for the second consecutive week as he totaled 16 tackles (four solo) in the Pioneers' 45-17 win over Union. He also forced one fumble, recovered a fumble and tallied a tackle for a loss. Giametta currently ranks sixth in Division III averaging 15 tackles a game.
