Elmira Men's Soccer Leads NCAA In Scoring
The NCAA released the Division III men’s soccer statistical leaders on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 11, and Elmira College is the national leader in scoring at 7.0 goals per game. Elmira actually leads all NCAA divisions in scoring as High Point, Old Dominion and Maryland (3.75 gpg) top Division I and Saint Michael’s (5.74 gpg) is the Division II leader.
The Soaring Eagles registered six goals in their season opener at Baptist Bible (9/3) before adding five goals verse Lehman (9/8) and 10 goals verse Medgar Evans (9/9) as part of the Utica College Tournament.
Elmira is also ranked fifth in total goals (21) and assists (15). Junior midfielder Ernesto Valverde’s four goals and three assists have led Elmira’s high-powered offensive attack. The Soaring Eagles improved to 4-0 Tuesday afternoon with a 2-1 win over Cazenovia in which Valverde scored the tying goal in the 78th minute and converted a penalty kick with 39 seconds remaining in regulation for the win.
Utica College (4-1) finds itself ranked seventh in total goals scored (20) through its first five games, thanks in large part to junior forward Kevin McAllister who individual ranks sixth in Division III with six goals scored. Junior midfielder Alex Sheridan is the national leader in assists with five on the season to date tied with four other Division III players.
Nazareth’s Luke Eltson ranks third in points per game (4.0) and sixth in goals per game (1.67). He added to his total Tuesday in the 3-1 win against Fredonia where he registered one goal and one assist as the Golden Flyers improved to 4-0.
