First American Football Coaches Association poll of season released
Four Empire 8 football teams appear in the first 2012 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll, the organization announced Monday.
St. John Fisher is the highest ranked E8 team at No. 9 with 634 points. Fisher went undefeated in its first three games of the season.
Salisbury University (2-1) received 503 points in the poll after closing its non-conference schedule with a 69-6 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College at Sea Gull Stadium on Saturday. The Sea Gulls finished just outside the top 10 at No. 11, 57 points behind Baldwin Wallace University.
On the heals of its historic victory over then No. 1 UW-Whitewater on Saturday, Buffalo State (2-1) broke into the national ranks for the first time since 2000, ranking 24th. Buffalo State traveled to UW-Whitewater this past Saturday and snapped the three-time defending national champions' 46-game winning streak with a 7-6 victory. It was the first time a non-ranked team had ever defeated a No. 1 team during a regular season game.
Ithaca (2-0) is one of 39 schools also receiving votes.
