D3football.com Top 25 Poll Ranks Salisbury, Fisher and Buffalo State
D3fotball.com has released its top 25 poll following the third week of competition in the 2012 season ranking Salisbury, St. John Fisher College and Buffalo State.
The Sea Gulls dropped a spot to No. 8, the Cardinals dropped one spot to No. 10 and the previously unranked Bengals find themselves at No. 19.
Buffalo State (2-1) pulled off the biggest upset of the week, defeating University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. If you’re looking for the last time a team ranked No. 1 in the D3football.com Top 25 lost in the regular season, you can stop checking. There just isn’t one to speak of. This is a truly rare event in Division III football. The D3football poll started in 2003.
Buffalo State will look to carry the momentum of this historic win when it plays its first-ever Empire 8 Conference game Saturday, Sept. 22 at home against Alfred at 12:30 p.m.
Salisbury (2-1) received 449 points in the poll after forcing five turnovers and limiting North Carolina Wesleyan College to 204 yards of offense in a 69-6 win at Sea Gull Stadium.
Fisher (3-0) totaled 373 points after rallying to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, as they battled back to beat University of Rochester 20-16.
Fisher will return to action at 4 p.m. next Saturday and will host Hartwick College in the Empire 8 season opener for both teams. Following a bye, Salisbury starts conference play at Buffalo State College, Sept. 29 at noon.
The University of Mount Union (23) took over the No. 1 spot and garnered 623 points followed by Mary Hardin-Baylor (2) who moved up to the No. 2 spot in the poll. Linfield jumped two spots to No. 3 and the defending national champion, the UW-Whitewater dropped to No. 4.
