Allocco and Shelton Recognized by E8
Nazareth middle blocker Maria Allocco and setter Catie Shelton from Stevens Institute of Technology have been selected the Empire 8 women’s volleyball player and rookie of the week for the week ending Sept. 16.
Allocco, a 6-foot-1 sophomore from Ballston Lake, recorded 42 kills in five matches to go with a hitting percentage of .434. Included in her weekly total was a 16-kill, four-dig effort in a close four-set loss to Potsdam. She also totaled seven service aces for the week and represented Nazareth on the all-tournament team at the RIT Invitational.
Allocco has been a steady performer for the Golden Flyers this fall with a team-best .418 hitting percentage on 107 kills. She also has 21 service aces and 31 blocks.
Shelton, the Central Square native, totaled 28 digs and 15 assists in a 2-3 week for Stevens. Her best performance came in a 3-0 win over FDU-Florham where she dished out all 15 assists and collected five digs and one solo block. She added eight digs against New Paltz and seven digs against York (PA).
Nazareth and Stevens return to action on this weekend in the first of three conference crossover tournaments.
