Kacz, Hall, Hawks Capture Empire 8 Weekly Football Honors
Casey Kacz (Amherst/Sweet Home), Chris Hall (Pasadena, CA/St. Francis) and Tommy Hawks (White Plains, Md./McDonough School) earned the inaugural 2012 honors after Empire 8 teams went 7-0 Saturday.
Kacz and Hall wasted no time making a name for themselves in Buffalo State’s first week as members of the Empire 8 conference, garnering the league’s Offense and Defensive Player of the Week accolades respectively. The Bengals defeated Cortland 49-31 in Saturday’s season opener.
Kacz, a junior quarterback, set a school record throwing for 579 yards, shattering the old mark of 413 by Chris Henry in 2000. The health and wellness major connected on 30 of 42 passes and tied a school standard with five touchdown passes. He also paced the team to a school best 706 yards of total offense.
Hall made an instant impression in his first game as a Bengal, equaling a school record with three interceptions. The junior corner back who transferred from Mt. San Antonio College (CA), also added four tackles.
Buffalo State will look to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 1999 when it travels to Brockport this Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff in the I-90 Bowl.
Hawks earned Empire 8 Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. Hawks blocked a potential go-ahead extra point for Christopher Newport University in the third quarter of a 13-13 tie on Saturday. The Captains knotted the game on the previous play and could have taken the lead with the point after, but Hawks got a hand on the ball. Salisbury then scored touchdowns on three straight possessions, going onto a 40-16 victory. The Sea Gulls' starting nose guard, Hawks also made two tackles for the game.
Sixth-ranked Salisbury hosts No. 3 Wesley College in its home opener Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium at 6 p.m.
