ROCHESTER, NY -- A noble trend has developed in college athletics as coaches, teams and student-athletes increasingly use their influence and visibility to benefit a number of extremely worthy causes.
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee’s from around the Empire 8 Athletic Conference joined the fold with an E8 Pink initiative. Student-athletes took some time away from their busy schedules to make a difference in their community this fall raising money for Breast Cancer research.
“Our student-athletes did a great job not only raising money, but awareness of breast cancer, and the necessity to be checked,” stated Commissioner Chuck Mitrano.
Throughout the fall, primarily the month of October, Empire 8 institutions held a variety of events to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
The campus SAAC’s held breast cancer awareness games where athletes wore pink jerseys and socks and collected donations. Teams sold pink ribbons, bracelets and t-shirts, while some schools donated ticket sales and even held a pink-pie in the face contest to show support.
Commissioner Mitrano was extremely pleased with the way all E8 athletic departments supported the initiative, and now the foundation has been laid for growth and continued positive influence.
The Empire 8 raised a total of $11,317 for national and local Breast Cancer foundations.
“So many people are affected by breast cancer and for many of us it hits close to home,” said Commissioner Mitrano. “I am glad the SAAC’s could contribute to helping all those who are fighting this disease.”
