School record set and ECAC qualifying marks reached

Junior Michael Cahill of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's indoor track & field team was named Empire 8 Conference Track Athlete of the Week, while senior throws specialist Dwight Hicks of Utica College was tabbed the Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 13.

At the Gotham Cup event in the Armory, Cahill set a new Stevens record in the 5,000-meter run by four seconds with a time of 15:15.69. He re-established the school standard, which stood since 2006, in a 10th place showing amongst runners from all three NCAA Divisions.

He was the top Division III runner in the event and qualified for the ECAC Championships, en route to a personal best performance by 13 seconds.

Hicks took first place, on the college level, in the weight throw with an ECAC qualifying mark of 15.36 meters (50' 4.75”) over the weekend at the RIT Invitational. He also placed third in the shot put with a toss of 14.13 meters (46' 4”), missing the post-season mark by .22 meters.

Last season, the Syracuse native won the shot put at both the Empire 8 Indoor Championships on Jan. 28 2012 and the Outdoor Championships on April 21, 2012 with tosses of 14.91 and 12.43 meters.
