Stevens 78, St. John Fisher 67 (OT)
Junior Molly Spadaro (Sewell, N.J.) scored six points in the final 20 seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime and  the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team dominated the extra period to earn a wild 78-67 overtime victory over St. John Fisher College on Saturday.

The first half was a taught, back-and-forth battle with the teams each scoring 24 points. Both sides also hit 10 field goals in an additional layer of parity. Fisher held the lead for the first ten minutes, but a three-pointer from Spadaro gave the Ducks their first lead of the game.

Clair Walsh (Binghampton, N.Y.) and Sydney Bloomstein (Millbury, Mass.) formed a potent one-two punch for the visitors and combined for 13 of the Cardinals’ first-half points. Spadaro led Stevens’ balanced scoresheet with seven at the break, but six players had points for the Ducks in the first half.

The second period began much as the first had, with the Cardinals in front and the Ducks trailing but staying within striking distance. Though they committed 29 turnovers in the game, the Women of Hoboken shot a remarkable 54 percent from the field to make the most of every possession.

Stevens freshman Miranda Ripken (Fallston, Md.) also had the most productive day of her young career on Satruday; she scored 22 points and added three assists in 43 minutes for the Ducks.

With the second half clock down to single digits and the Ducks trailing by three, Spadaro shook down her defender and pulled up for another clutch three-pointer that caused the crowd to erupt into its loudest crescendo of the afternoon. That bucket tied it up and forced overtime.

Then, on the first possession of extra time, Spadaro hit a transition layup for the early lead. In fact, the Ducks opened the overtime on a 12-0 run that was part of a larger 18-0 run that began with 20 seconds remaining in regulation.

Maggie Kowalska (Edison, N.J.) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and a game-high three blocks…Stevens shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half…The Ducks out-rebounded the Cardinals 51-30.
