The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced that the Houghton Women’s Soccer team, and head coach David Lewis, are one of only eight Division I, II, III, Junior College and NAIA men's or women's programs to receive a 2012 NSCAA Team Ethics Gold Award. The Gold standard for the Team Ethics award is reserved for collegiate soccer teams displaying the utmost in sportsmanship by receiving no yellow or red cards during the season.
Houghton previously earned the prestigious gold honor in 2006 and 2009.
The Team Ethics Award recognizes schools that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the Laws of the Game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season.
The Silver Award went to 48 women’s programs, including four Empire 8 institutions – Elmira, Ithaca, Nazareth and St. John Fisher. Those schools accumulated no red cards and no more than five yellow cards during the season.
The Bronze Award, presented to Stevens, is awarded to teams that received no reds and a maximum of 10 yellows.
