Thompson and Bevan Named E8 Athletes of the Week
Senior guard Russ Thompson of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s basketball team was named the Empire 8 Player of the Week and Ithaca freshman Sam Bevan was tabbed the Rookie of the Week.
Thompson keyed the Ducks to a pair of wins, improving their overall record to 8-1 and conference mark to 2-0.
In Friday’s win over Houghton College, Thompson scored 10 points, handed out three assists and grabbed two rebounds. He backed that performance with a career-high 32 points in a comeback victory at Nazareth College Saturday. In that game, the senior went 10-for-16 from the field and 6-for-10 from beyond the arc. He was 6-for-6 at the line and 25 of his points came in a second half in which the Ducks were able to erase a 13-point deficit.
For the week, Thompson averaged 21 points, shot 62.5 percent from the field and 46 percent from long range in 31 minutes per game.
The Ducks return home for a pair of conference games Friday night and Saturday afternoon against Alfred University (8 p.m.) and St. John Fisher College (4 p.m.).
Bevan scored a career-high seven points in just nine minutes of action in the Bombers' 101-76 victory over Alfred Friday night. He again rewrote his career-high with an eight-point performance in Ithaca's narrow 48-46 win over St. John Fisher on Saturday. Bevan added four rebounds, two assists and one steal during the 2-0 week.
The Bombers return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. when they travel to Empire 8 opponent Utica.
