The Utica College women's soccer team snapped its five-game losing streak as it downed host Alfred University 2-1 in Empire 8 Conference play Sunday afternoon. Sophomore
Krystine Alvear and senior
Sarah Southwell each netted goals for the Pioneers.
After a scoreless first half, Alvear broke the deadlock in the 69th minute as she tallied her third goal of the year, unassisted. Alfred bounced back at 74:32 as Nicole Lobur was able to beat Utica net minder
Jamie Enders. It was short lived however as Southwell found the back of the net for the game winner, just three minutes later. Southwell's unassisted tally was her third of the year.
Ender had two saves in the win, while Samijo Scheer had made five saves for Alfred. Utica improves to 3-8-2 overall (1-4 Empire 8) while the Saxons fall to 4-9 with an 0-4 mark in the E8.
Nazareth 3, Elmira 0
Host Nazareth scored three times in the first half Sunday and went on to defeat Elmira in an Empire 8 Conference women's soccer match, 3-0, at Golden Flyer Stadium.
The victory was the third of the week for the Golden Flyers – all by shutout – as they improved to 8-3-2 overall and 4-0-0 in conference play. The Golden Flyers host sixth-ranked Ithaca Saturday at 1 p.m. in a battle of E8 unbeatens. Nazareth also defeated Houghton, 1-0, on Tuesday and Stevens, 2-0 on Saturday.
The first half featured the first career goal for sophomore Jessica Lesczynski, who scored on a blast from about 25 yards out just over two minutes before halftime. Sophomore
Danielle Wilkin assisted.
Nazareth also scored on a similar play early in the game as freshman
Elisa Marchione scored her third goal of the season in the second minute on a blast that targeted the upper right corner from about 25 yards away.
In between, senior
Olivia Derleth scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season and third of the weekend as she blasted a shot into the goal from the left side after a scramble in front. Junior
Kaitlyn Sowyrda was credited with an assist.
Nazareth had a 19-9 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Senior
Bethany Novak and sophomore
Mackenzie Dunphy combined on the shutout for Nazareth. Novak made two saves and Dunphy four. Amanda Banner played all 90 minutes in goal Elmira and made eight saves.
