Nazareth v Cazenovia | Keystone
Nazareth's women's volleyball team finished the Dig Pink Invitational with two more victories to give the Golden Flyers a 4-0 record over the weekend. Nazareth defeated host Cazenovia in three sets by the scores of 25-13, 25-16, 29-27, then knocked off Keystone in another three-set match by the scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-14.

With the victories, the Golden Flyers improve to 20-6 overall. With the loss, Cazenovia falls to 5-22 overall. Keystone fell to 11-10 overall following its loss to Nazareth.

In the Golden Flyers' match against Cazenovia, junior Kassandra Buseck had a team-high nine kills with only one attack error to lead the Golden Flyers. Sophomore Jennifer Hicks finished with six kills. Eight other Nazareth players combined for 19 additional kills. Freshman Maureen Thayer finished with 15 assists to direct the Golden Flyers' attack.

Defensively, juniors Katherine Race and Chelsea Beecher each finished with six digs. Thayer thwarted a Cazenovia attempt at the net with a solo block. Hicks also had two assisted blocks.

Thayer, Beecher, and junior Maria Allocco all amassed three service aces. The Golden Flyers finished with 14 total aces.

Against Keystone, Thayer had 18 assists and five service aces. Nazareth tallied 11 total aces during the match. Hicks and Buseck each tallied eight kills while Allocco recorded seven kills. Hicks converted her kills on 13 attempts and did not commit a hitting error. The Golden Flyers recorded hitting percentages of .53, .38, and .19 in the respective three sets. Nazareth was especially efficient in the opening set where they recorded 13 kills and three errors on only 19 attempts.

Defensively, freshman Cady Messmer tallied a team-high nine digs, and classmate Kaitlyn Relyea had six digs. Hicks finished with two solo blocks. Thayer, Hicks, Buseck, and Allocco each also added one assisted block apiece.


Elmira v Cazenovia | MCLA
The Elmira College women's volleyball team (17-9) completed a sweep of the Cazenovia Dig Pink Tournament after picking up a pair of 3-0 wins. The Soaring Eagles did not lose a single set in the tournament this weekend. The EC women defeated Keystone College (11-11) in the morning matchup before taking down the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (8-12).

Taryn Rumsey '14 and Ashley Heiman '16 led the Soaring Eagles in today's action. Rumsey finished the day with 20 kills, 15 digs, five aces and an assist while Heiman tallied 19 kills, three block assists, two digs and one solo block. Sami Hanes '16 set up the attack today with 52 assists and also chipped in with eight digs, two block assists, two aces and two kills. Catherine Miller '14 and Amanda Blinkinsop '16 led the defensive effort as they combined to post 39 digs.

The EC women used the two-game sweep of the prior night as momentum going into this match-up. Rumsey and Heiman led the Purple and Gold offensively as they both tallied nine kills apiece. Hanes helped out by putting up 29 assists while Miller and Blinkinsop led the defensive effort with a combined 23 digs.

The Soaring Eagles kept the momentum rolling in the second game of the day as they let up a combined 24 points in three sets to the Trailblazers. Once again the Purple and Gold looked to Rumsey and Heiman to lead them offensively as they combined for 21 kills while Hanes produced 23 assists in the afternoon contest. Miller and Blinkinsop both put up eight digs apiece.

Houghton v Stevens | Hartwick
Houghton women's volleyball got two quality wins over Empire 8 Conference opponents on Saturday, beating Stevens Tech, 3-1 (26-24, 12-25, 25-23, 25-23) and Hartwick, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15).

Against Stevens, who entered the undefeated in conference action, the Highlanders got strong performances from across the lineup. Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) led the way with 13 kills and 21 digs. Hannah Compeau (Oxford, MI, Faith Baptist) and Meagan Palm (Lakeland, FL, Lakeland Christian) also recorded double figures in kills with 12 and 10, respectively. Laurel Wroblicky (Irvine, CA, Northwood) continued her solid play defensivley, with 33 digs. Jaime Green (Port Huron, MI, New Life Christian) led the attack with 33 assists.

Burgher once again spearheaded the attack against Hartwick, registering her second double-double of the day, with 14 kills and 17 digs. Palm finished with 10 kills, Green added 33 more assists, while Alyssa Quimby (Northglenn, CO, Community Christian), Compeau and Wroblicky each had double-digits dig totals.

The team had a .324 attack percentage against the Hawks.


Stevens v Houghton | Hartwick
Senior Samantha Gates (Wilmington, N.C.) of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball set the career assists record at Stevens in an Empire 8 Conference split with Houghton College and Hartwick College on Saturday. The Ducks fell to Houghton, 3-1, but topped Hartwick in four sets to go 20-5 on the season.

Gates needed 61 assists heading into today's tri-match to tie the program record of 3,198 set by Sara Budar and dished out 85 combined in the two contests. The senior handed out 50 in the four-set loss to the Highlanders, 26-24, 12-25, 25-23, 25-23, and came back with 35 in the victory over the Hawks, 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-10.

In the setback to Houghton, which does not go against conference standings since the Highlanders are still a provisional NCAA member, junior Kirsten Salmins (Wyckoff, N.J.) recorded a career-high 43 digs to lead all players.

Freshman Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) paced the Ducks with 18 kills to go along with 12 digs, while Gates recorded 12 digs and three service aces as well. ClassmateChristina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) posted 12 kills and a .211 hitting percentage.

Senior Mary Caulson (West Islip, N.Y.) added 11 digs and seven kills for Stevens, while junior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) contributed 10 kills.

Sophomore Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) added eight kills and three blocks in the loss, while fellow sophomore Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) pitched in eight digs.

In the victory over Hartwick, Salmins once again led all players with 28 digs. Sciarra registered a match-best 15 kills in 31 swings for a .387 hitting percentage, while Hall posted 10 more kills and hit .429.

Gates added nine digs in the win, while Thomas hit at a .500 clip with seven kills in 14 attempts. Caulson and sophomore Kristen Herchenroder (Breezy Point, N.Y.) each posted seven kills for the Ducks in the second match. Caulson chipped in seven digs, while Herchenroder added nine more.


Ithaca v Wells| Messiah
The Ithaca College volleyball team (11-17) split a pair of contests Saturday to conclude the 2013 Ithaca Tournament. The Bombers secured their third straight victory with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-19) sweep of Wells (4-17) before dropping a 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-14) decision to tournament champion, Messiah (14-9) in Ben Light Gymnasium. Freshman Shaelynn Schmidt (Piney Point, Md./Patuxent) represented Ithaca on the all-tournament team.

Against Wells, junior Rylie Bean (Blasdell, N.Y./Frontier) paced the Bomber offense with 14 kills on 30 swings for a .333 hitting percentage. Schmidt posted nine kills and classmate Siobhan Sorensen (Castleton, N.Y./Maple Hill) seven. Sophomore captain Carly Garone (East Moriches, N.Y./St. Anthony's) put up 35 assists. The Bombers combined to serve 13 aces against the Express. Bean dug 11 balls and rookie Maggie Mutschler (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) added eight. Sorensen had four blocks (1 solo, 3 assists).

Schmidt put down 12 kills against the Falcons and rookie Grace Chang (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) added 10. Molly Brown (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) recorded 16 assists and Garone 13. Gawinski Stern served up three aces and shared a match-best 16 digs with Chang. Junior Abbie Hutchinson (Pownal, Maine/Yarmouth) posted five blocks to lead Ithaca at the net.


Alfred v Cobleskill | Keuka
The Alfred University volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the AU-hosted tri-match with SUNY Cobleskill and Keuka. The Saxons topped Cobleskill, 3-2, and lost to Keuka, 3-0.

In the win over Cobleskill, AU (3-18) won by scores of 25-21, 24-26, 28-26, 19-25 and 15-6. Senior Core' Oppliger (Neuchatel, Switzerland/Lycee Jean-Piaget) had 13 kills and four blocks and senior Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had 46 assists and 23 digs to lead Alfred.

Senior Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) had 11 kills and 17 digs; senior Kelsey Brand (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) had 10 kills and a pair of blocks; senior Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had nine kills, seven assists and four blocks; senior Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) had eight kills and seven digs; and junior Taylor Kiernan (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) had 28 digs.

In the match against Keuka, Brand had seven kills and four digs; Oppliger had four kills and three blocks; Wood had six blocks; Kiernan had 14 digs; Hall had three kills and 12 digs; and Gallipeau had 17 assists.|

St. John Fisher v Kean | Baruch
The St, John Fisher College volleyball team rebounded from an opening match loss to Kean University, defeating Baruch College in four sets 25-17, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-19.  Fisher fell in the opening match in three sets to Kean University, 25-19, 25-9, 25-16.

Fisher started slow in the first two sets falling behind but the Cardinals were able to gain some momentum in the third set.

Erica Stickler had two aces in the first four points and Fisher jumped out to a 4-0 lead.  Fisher kept the set close for awhile before the Cougars took command at the end of the set to secure the victory.

Senior Rachael Kline led the way with eight kills for a .333 hitting percentage.  Stickler had nine assists for the Cardinals.

In the second match of the day Fisher battled back and forth with Baruch College in the first set.  With Fisher leading 16-14, the Cardinals erupted for 9 of the last 12 points of the set to win 25-17. 

After Baruch took the second set, Fisher stormed back in the third set to win 25-20.  

In the final set with the Cardinals leading 18-17, Stickler recorded three kills down the stretch to propel Fisher to the 25-19 win.

Megan Miller and Rachael Kline combined for 33 kills, with 19 and 14 respectively.  Stickler dished out 41 assists in the match.

Utica v Medaille | Wells
The Utica College volleyball team salvaged a split on the second day of the Ithaca Invitational Saturday afternoon.  The Pioneers lost to Medaille College 3-1 in the first match, before bouncing back to defeat Wells College 3-1.

UC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first match, taking the opening set against Medaille 25-22, however the Mavericks fought back, winning the next three sets to take the match.  Freshman Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) matched her career-high with 14 kills and added five blocks to lead the Pioneers.  Sophomore Lora Allen(Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had a team-best 16 assists, while Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) added 16 digs to pace UC.  Junior Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) had eight kills, followed by Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) with seven.  Allen also had 14 digs on the day, while freshman Carly Lonczak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) had an impressive outing with 15 assists and 12 digs. 

In the second match, junior Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) led to way for Utica, recording a season-high 18 kills.  Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) had ten kills and three blocks, while Blaszak had nine kills and a game-high seven blocks.  Allen and Lonczak combined for 33 assists, while Chelsea Lauria(Erieville, NY/Cazenovia)Liz Sacco (Franklin, Mass. /Franklin), and Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) also added helpers.  Enny once again led the Pioneers with 14 digs, followed by Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent) with 12, and Allen and Blaszak with ten each.  Lauria, Manzer, Hayley Strife (Lowville, NY/Lowville)Cassi Brancato (Gloversville, NY/Mayfield)Carly Lonczak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro), Sacco, and Homer-Gunther also tallied digs.

Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia) was Utica's lone representative on the All-Tournament team after her performance over the four matches.  Utica (7-17) will return to action on October 18, as the Pioneers head to Oneonta, NY for the Hartwick College Holiday Inn Invitational. UC will take on Oneonta State in the first match at 6 p.m.

Hartwick v Stevens | Houghton
Dana Martin (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) and Hannah Strom (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor)combined for 34 kills and 37 digs but the Hartwick volleyball team fell in a pair of matches at Houghton College on Saturday.

The Hawks dropped a 3-1 (16-25, 17-25, 25-23, 10-25) decision to Stevens in their final Empire 8 match of the season. They finish with a 3-4 mark but still have a chance at qualifying for the conference playoffs.

'Wick lost in three sets, 16-25, 17-25, 15-25 to the host Highlanders in its second match.

Against Stevens, the Hawks fell behind by two games but battled back in the third game to cut the deficit in half. The first-place place Ducks would close it out in the fourth, however, to take the match.

Strom accumulated nine kills and a team-high 14 digs for the Hawks. Martin added nine kills and 11 digs. Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) contributed seven kills, 17 assists, and nine digs. Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) had a team-high 18 assists to go along with five kills.

In the Hawks' second match, Strom recorded nine kills with Martin adding seven. Mary Beth DeCuyke (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) contributed six kills. Christina Vitale (Port Jefferson Stations, NY/St. John the Baptist) had a team-best 17 digs. Kinzel added 15 assists and nine digs.
