Rowan Downs Stevens, 4-1
Rowan University defeated Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 4-1 Wednesday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. in a non-conference field hockey match.
The Ducks drop to 8-5 overall, while Rowan improves to 7-5 on the season.
Rowan controlled the run of play in the opening moments, getting several penalty corners and quality chances but Stevens' freshman goalkeeper
Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.) was up to the task and made several saves to keep the Profs off the board.
The Ducks responded and fought their way out of their own zone, but could not capitalize on a couple chances and the game remained scoreless after 15 minutes of game play.
In the 17th minute, Rowan's
Marisa Marini (Wilmington, Del.) put the Profs on the board after a penalty corner. Marini inserted and moved to the left post, receiving a pass from junior forward
Kellie Campbell (Clark, N.J.) and putting in her shot.
The Ducks created a number of excellent chances over the next 15-plus minutes of action, but were unable to get the equalizer, and fell in a 2-0 hole at 33:47 when Marini scored her second of the afternoon.
Rowan ended the first half with a 12-11 margin in shots and a 10-7 edge in penalty corners.
The Ducks had three great chances in the opening three minutes of the second half. On the first, Rowan goalkeeper
Steph Colombo (Moorestown, N.J.) thwarted a breakaway chance started by senior forward
Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.). On the second, Colombo made a pair of nice saves, and the third saw a pretty corner result in a blast from junior forward
Jillian Fiebel (Roxbury, N.J.) that missed inches wide – one-timing a nice pass from senior back
Grace Ridge (Moorestown, N.J.).
The Ducks got on the board to make it a 2-1 game at 50:09. Chavez inserted to senior back
Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) on a penalty corner and she hammered home her bid into the left corner for her eighth goal of the season.
Rowan answered 2:43 later to push the lead back to two goals (2-1) with an unassisted tally from senior forward
Amy McKeever (West Deptford, N.J.) and then sealed the win with a penalty stroke goal from Campbell with 12:16 remaining.
The Ducks did not quit down the stretch with Traub, senior forward
Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.), senior forward
Chelsea Cresci (Wilmington, Del.), sophomore midfielder
Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and
Marguerite Chavez all getting quality looks that Colombo was able to save.
Stevens ended with a 26-20 edge in shots and a 15-13 margin in penalty corners. Stukenborg made nine stops in the loss for Stevens. Colombo totaled 15 saves for Rowan.
Stevens will return to action at Houghton College on October 19.
