WATERFORD, Conn. (October 19, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's cross country team placed sixth overall at the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday and senior
Michael Cahill (Clark, N.J.) established a new school record on the 8K course.
Stevens totaled 186 points at Harkness Memorial State Park out of 21 teams on the day. Keene State College won the meet with 74 team points and the United State Coast Guard Academy was close behind with 77 points. Connecticut College, Vassar College and Southern Connecticut State University rounded out the top five.
"This meet was a breakout for the men, they really stepped it up today," said head coach
Justin Wood. "Two weeks ago, we raced to a team average of 27:24 at Paul Short and today we averaged 26:20. We have a few other pieces that we need to put together but we are definitely moving in the right direction."
Cahill finished third individually with a new school record time of 25:19 and was just five seconds behind the runner-up performer. The previous best time set at any course for Stevens was 25:54 set by Cahill last fall and Will Sanders in 2005.
"Cahill's school record run of 25:19 for 8K was very impressive. He has returned to the form he was in this past spring when he ran 14:45 for 5K and 31:21 for 10K," stated Wood.
Freshman
Nicholas Zickgraf (Kenilworth, N.J.) finished second for Stevens and 29th overall out of 248 runners at the meet with a time of 26:26. Junior
Thomas Cunningham (Colonia, N.J.) ran a time of 26:40 to finish 42nd overall.
Senior
Louis Stengel (Vernon, N.J.) and freshman
Andrew Parlette (Clarksville, Md.) rounded out the top five for Stevens in 51st and 61st, respectively. Stengel clocked a time of 26:46, while Parlette crossed the line in 26:52.
Stevens will compete again on November 2 at the Empire 8 Conference Championship hosted by Ithaca College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Last fall, the Ducks finished second overall as a team for the third consecutive year.
