Elmira Wins Twice; Hartwick Goes 1-1
Elmira v Hunter | Rutgers Camden
The Elmira College women's volleyball team (17-9, 2-2 E8) won both games 3-1 at the Rutgers-Camden Tri-Match today. The EC women defeated Hunter College, 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-17) in the first matchup and then went on to beat Rutgers-Camden 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 31-29) in the second matchup.
Taryn Rumsey '14 and
Kierstin Derr '16 led the way for the Soaring Eagles in the first matchup. Rumsey posted 13 kills, 12 digs, three aces and one solo block while Derr put in 15 kills, four digs and an assist.
Sami Hanes'16 set up the attack by chipping in 39 assists to go along with five digs and an ace in the first game.
Catherine Miller '14 produced 26 digs to lead the team defensively to go along with three aces against Hunter.
Rumsey once again led the team offensively in the second match of the day after tallying 20 kills to go along with six digs and one ace. Hanes helped out with 41 assists, eight digs and one ace while Miller produced 27 digs, a solo block, and an block assist to lead the team defensively.
Hartwick v Lebanon Valley | New Paltz
Hartwick (9-18) split a pair of matches for the second straight day to end play at the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament on Saturday at Lambros Arena. The Hawks, who tied for third at the six-team event, began the day with a 3-0 (24-26, 18-25, 12-25) loss to second-place Lebanon Valley College but responded in their second match for a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-13, 25-17) triumph over Utica. SUNY New Paltz took the title with a 4-0 mark on the weekend.
In their opening match against a 20-win LVC squad, the Hawks played their best set in the opener as they were just one point from taking a 1-0 lead. With the score 23-all a Dutchmen service error would put 'Wick one point away from closing out the game. However, an Alli Quirk kill evened the score at 24, and following a Hartwick error, LVC closed out set one, 26-24, with an ace.
The Hawks kept it close in set number two. Following a
Hannah Strom (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) kill, the Hawks cut their deficit to four, 21-17. The Dutchmen would score the next three points, however, and close it out, 25-18, with a kill from Sara Godfrey.
The visitors controlled the third set, building a seven-point lead early, 10-3. They never led by less than six the rest of the way in a 25-12 win to secure the match.
Katie Ryan (Circleville, NY/Pine Bush) had the team-high in kills with seven. Strom (6) and Martin (5) combined for 11 and
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) had five kills.
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) and
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) each recorded 10 digs for the Hawks. Armstrong also registered 12 assists and
Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland) added 11.
The Hawks returned to the court against Empire 8 rival Utica with the two teams trading sets in the opening two frames. The Hawks took the first, 25-19, with the Pioneers returning the favor in the second, 25-23. Hartwick dominated the third set, 25-13, and earned its ninth win, taking the fourth set, 25-17.
Martin who was named to the All-Tournament Team, finished with a match-high 17 kills. She contributed seven digs. Strom added 11 kills, 12 digs and seven service aces for 'Wick.
Mary Beth DeCuyke (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown)chipped in with nine kills.
Kinzel dished out 27 assists for the Hawks and she notched eight digs. Armstrong added a double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs.
Christina Vitale (Post Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) had a match-high 15 digs defensively.
Alfred v Sage | Oswego State
The Alfred University women's volleyball team competed at the Oswego tri-match on the road, Saturday afternoon.
AU fell to Sage College, 3-1, taking the first set with scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-15, and 25-16.
Seniors
Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) (11 digs) and
Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) (8 digs) led the team with 10 and eight kills. Senior
Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) (34 assists) and junior
Taylor Kiernan (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) posted team-high 12 digs each. Seniors
Kelsey Brand (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) and
Core' Oppliger (Neuchatel, Switzerland/Lycee Jean-Piaget) both had two blocks.
The Lady Saxons later dropped three sets to Oswego State (25-14, 25-11, 25-18).
Jensen and Oppliger led the team with two blocks. Seniors
Samantha Wood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) and
Kelly Bly (Waterford, NY/Mechanicville) earned three kills apiece.
Utica at Holiday Inn Tournament
The Utica College volleyball team went 1-3 at the Holiday Inn Invitational hosted by Hartwick College this weekend. Freshman
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance over the four matches.
Utica went 1-1 on the first day, falling to Oneonta State 3-1, before rebounding to knock off the City College of New York, 3-0. On Saturday, UC fell to Lebanon Valley College 3-0 and the host Hartwick College 3-1 in the second match of the day.
Blaszak totaled 43 kills in the four matches, averaging 10.75 kills per match on the weekend. She also had 12 blocks and four digs. Sophomore setter
Lora Allen (Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville) had a team-best 63 assists on the weekend as well as five service aces. Junior
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) led the team with 58 digs, averaging 14.5 per outing.
Cassandra Manzer (Portcrane, NY/Chenango Valley) was second on the squad with 22 kills over the weekend, while sophomore
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) had 18 kills.
Diamond DeVane (Ridge, NY/Longwood) had ten kills in ten sets played.
