’Wick Swimming and Diving Teams Open Seasons at Hartwick Relays
ONEONTA, NY- The Hartwick men's and women's swimming and diving teams began their 2013-14 seasons by hosting the eighth annual Hartwick Relays on Saturday afternoon at Moyer Pool. Both the men and women came out victorious in the five-team event.
The men's team totaled 130 points which was 18 points better than second place Oneonta State. The College of St. Rose (82), Cobleskill (32), and Wells (24) followed.
Brad Ranson (Pennington, NY/Hopewell Valley),
Daniel MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie),
Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Halahan),
Chris Farrell (Charlotte, NC/Rocky River), and
Joey Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield) all were a part of three winning relay teams to pace the men.
Kris Sanders (Tillsonburg, ONT/St. Mary's) and
Matt Plunkett (Fort Lauderdale, FL/Cooper City) were both a part of two winning relays.
Alexander Gibson (San Leandro, CA/Castro Valley High),
Zane Grunewald (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Acad.),
Matt Behn (Windsor, NY/Windsor Central),
Ryan Cichielo (Cape Coral, FL/Cape Coral),
Luis Santiesteban (Key Largo, FL) all won one.
One record was set by the men. The team of Mulvehill, DeGidio, Behn, and Ranson posted a time of 1:28.66 which beat the previous meet record of 1:28.68 set last year by Hartwick.
The women's team had a total of 118 points which was 10 points ahead of Oneonta State. The College of St. Rose (94), SUNY Cobleskill (52), and Wells College (44) followed.
Imma Rutigliano (Tillson, NY/John A.Coleman) and
Clare Nelson (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) both were a part of three winning relay teams.
Gwen Mathias (Sunland, CA/Southwestern Academy),
Kaitlyn Campbell (Hanover Park, IL/Glenhard North),
Helen Merkley (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland),
Lindsay Bierwert (Leeds, MA/Northampton), and
Kelsey Elliot (Cortland, NY/Homer) took part in two winning relays.
Hanna Prendeville (Glens Falls, NY/Warrensburg) and
Rachel Bellis (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Acad.) both won one each.
Three meet records were set on the women's side. The 300 back relay team of Rutigliano, Merkley, and Mathias came in first with a time of 3:07.94. That bested the previous time of 3:10.43 set in 2011 by the College of St. Rose. In the 600 IM, the squad of Prendeville, Nelson, and Rutigliano won in a time of 6:58.88. That broke the meet record of 6:59.57 set last year by the Golden Knights. The quartet of Merkley, Nelson, Bierwert, and Campbell set a new record of 9:15.02 that beat the previous time of 9:15.35 set by Hartwick in 2011.
The two teams will host a four team with the College of St. Rose, Cazenovia, and Utica next Saturday. Diving events will begin at 9 a.m. with the swimming portion starting at 1 p.m.
