Alfred, Stevens and Houghton Win at Home
Alfred 1, Ithaca 0
The Alfred University men's soccer team improved to 5-10 (1-4 Empire 8) on the season with a 1-0 win over visiting Ithaca College, Tuesday evening at Yunevich Stadium.
Both teams remained scoreless at halftime, and deep into the second half, until the 81
st minute when sophomore midfielder
Omar Mohamed sent a long through ball to freshman midfielder
Oumar Soumahoro for him to bury in the left side of the goal past the keeper, sealing the 1-0 victory.
Senior goalie
Samuel Guy earned a game-high 10 saves throughout 90 minutes of play for AU.
Stevens 2, Rutgers-Newark 1
The fifth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Rutgers-Newark, 2-1, Tuesday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex. The Ducks have now won their last seven matches and are 12-1-1 on the season. Rutgers-Newark falls to 13-4-1 in the loss.
Similar to several early-season matches, Rutgers-Newark came out strong, forcing the action deep in the Stevens zone. That was short lived and save for a couple of shots, the Scarlet Raiders did not generate any strong scoring chances, and the Ducks responded.
Stevens got its footing, and quickly began to change the feel of the game, possessing the ball for long spurts and forcing the action.
Senior back
Leonardo Casas made a play to get the Ducks on the board at 24:06. Holding possession in the Stevens zone about 15-yards shy of midfield, Casas spotted sophomore forward
Carson Pryor making a run and lofted a long pass down the left side. Pryor chased the ball down near the end line, beating Rutgers-Newark goalie Matt Broomall to it, controlling and then tucking a shot inside the right post for the score from an extremely challenging angle.
Casas and Pryor nearly hooked up again, with a Pryor blast missing just wide, and the two teams went into the intermission with the scoreboard showing 1-0 Stevens.
Rutgers-Newark had several strong runs at the Ducks' goal in the early moments of the second half and even generated several corners, but the Scarlet Raiders were unable to put much of anything on net, and the Ducks quickly countered, getting a pretty goal from junior midfielder
Quinn Conner and sophomore forward
Colin Phillips. On the play, Conner took a pass from sophomore back
Harrison Kane and dribbled to the right end line before lofting a pretty cross that Phillips was somehow able to get into the goal for a 2-0 lead. The Conner cross came down inches from the right post, and Phillips snuck his bid under the crossbar and inside the left post for his seventh goal of the season.
Despite the two-goal margin, Stevens continued to press, nearly getting a third goal on the back of a Conner cross and a header from senior midfielder
Edward Rupp, but Broomall was able to make a diving save.
Stevens saw its scoreless streak nearly come to an end with 15 minutes left in regulation when a shot from Raphael Araujo hit the far post. The streak did end with 6:24 left in regulation, when senior midfielder Brian Barrera one-timed a cross inside the left post for a tally that sliced the Stevens lead in half.
From a goal late in the first half of an October 2 win at Wilkes University until the Barrera marker in this match, Stevens had held the opposition scoreless for 505:26 of game time.
Senior goalkeeper
Paul Killian made two saves and earned his 12th win of the season for the Ducks. Killian and the vaunted Stevens defense has only allowed six goals against the entire season, while the Ducks have scored 41 of their own which is good for a plus-35 scoring margin.
Stevens ended the match with a 12-9 edge in shots and a 6-5 margin in corners.
Houghton 1, Medaille 0
The Men's Houghton Soccer team defeated the Mavericks of Medaille College in a nail-biter, with a score of 1-0.
Tonight's match-up between the Highlanders and the Mavericks was one of great intensity, with a total of 25 fouls and 3 yellow cards that were handed out.
The Highlanders limited the Mavericks to only 2 shots-on-goal, those of which were unsuccessful attempts. Goalie
Jacob Dunnett had one save on the night, which played out to be a very important save.
The game was tied 0-0 going into the second half of the match. On Houghton's 4th and final shot-on-goal, it was number 22,
Tyler Ashley, who broke the tie when he scored the winning goal 22 minutes into the second half. Junior forward,
Kevin Miranda was responsible for the assist.
Hamilton 2, Utica 1
The Hamilton College men's soccer team completed the come from behind victory by netting the game-winner with 55 seconds left in regulation to earn a 2-1 victory over visiting Utica College Tuesday afternoon. Hamilton's Leo Nizzi scored the game-winning goal with just 54.4 seconds remaining to complete the Continental comeback.
The Pioneers took an early lead on a breakaway goal by
Jonathon Peterson 25:11 into the first half. Peterson took a long run down the right side and beat Hamilton goalie Harris Pollack, who came out to play the ball, for his third goal of the season.
The win stretched the Continentals' home unbeaten streak to eight games. Nizzi scored his first goal of the season on a shot from just inside the box after he received a through ball from Conor Bradley. Bradley picked up his first collegiate point with the assist.
The Continentals (4-5-3) withstood an eventful final 40 seconds that featured a Pioneer corner kick and the loss of the game clock. Hamilton goalkeeper Harris Pollack came off the goal line to corral the corner kick taken by
Brandon Horton with 34 seconds left. At nearly the same time the power was lost on the scoreboard, which stayed frozen at 00:40. With game time being kept on the field by the officials, the Continentals held Utica without another scoring opportunity.
Hamilton, which posted a 19-5 advantage in shots, picked up the equalizer in the 60th minute. Trevor Bobola crossed the ball from the right side to Bayard Geeslin, who headed it inside the far post for his first career goal.
The Continentals allowed only one other shot on goal. Peterson made a similar run less than a minute after the goal but Pollack made the save. On the year, Hamilton has given up fewer than four shots on goal per game.
David Abdou, who played the second half in net for Utica, finished with one save – a stellar effort on a high, hard shot taken by Dan Kraynak in the 74th minute.
Anthony Caruso wasn't credited with a save while playing the opening half, but preserved the Pioneers' lead by withstanding a flurry of corner kicks. The Continentals attempted five (all by Nizzi) in the final eight minutes of the half. Caruso leaped high to tip one over the cross bar in the 37th minute.
Hobart 3, Elmira 1
After falling behind early in the game, the Elmira College men's soccer team used a late push to make things interesting against Hobart College but eventually fell on the road, 3-1. Elmira's
Ryan Limero tallied his first goal of the season in the 81st minute of action.
The Soaring Eagles kept the Statesmen offense at bay for most of the first half until the 33rd minute when Joe Busuttil scored his third goal of the season, putting Hobart ahead 1-0. A little over six minutes later Tyler Niles added to the Statesmen lead with a goal of his own in the 39th minute, giving Hobart a 2-0 edge. Niles' goal would be the last of the half as the Soaring Eagles entered halftime trailing 2-0.
In the second half, things seemed to be on more of an even scale as the Purple and Gold outshot the Statesmen, 8-to-6. However, Hobart would again make the most of their chances by notching their third goal of the game in the 71st minute.
EC's Limero would cut the Statesmen lead to two as he scored his first goal of the season at the 80:25 mark. Limero broke through Hobart's back line, creating a one-on-one opportunity with the keeper. From there, Limero delivered a strike into the left corner of the net for the score.
Unfortunately, Limero's goal would be the final one of the game as the Soaring Eagles fell, 3-1. EC netminder
Nick Lapinski came up with six saves in today's contest.
