HOUGHTON, N.Y.—The Houghton Field Hockey came out of the gates strong in tonight's game against the Mustangs of Morrisville State.  The Highlanders beat the Mustangs with an impressive 14-1 score, producing 8 goals in the first half and 6 goals in the second half.

The score was so impressive that the Highlanders broke not just one school record, but two school records in tonight's game.

The first school record is an individual record that was set by two previous Highlanders, Ndunge Kiiti and Peg Roorbach. Both Kiiti and Roorbach individually scored a notable 5 goals in one game of competition. Senior, Maesa Phongsamouth (Leominster, Mass., Leominster)  passed up both Kiiti and Roorbach by scoring a remarkable 7 goals in tonight's game. Phongsamouth now holds the school record for the number of goals scored in one game. Not only was Phongsamouth responsible for 7 of the 14 goals, she also led the way in assists with 3.

The second school record is a team record that was set four times, most recently in 1996. This record consisted of 12 goals scored in one game. The 2013 Houghton Highlanders' Field Hockey team will forever be in the record books as setting the most goals scored in one game; the new record from tonight's game is 14 goals.

There were multiple contributors of this new school record. In addition to Phongsamouth's 7 goals and 3 assists, Colleen Sullivan (Salem, Conn., East Lyme HS) had 3 goals with 1 assist, while Jenna Newcombe (Rowley, Mass., Triton Regional High School)Kristin McKane (Clayville, N.Y., Mount Markham), Rebekah Adler (Rochester, N.Y., Gates- Chili), and Marissa Meassick (Westminster, Md., South Caroll HS) each scored 1 goal.

Newcombe and Hannah Zgrablich (Doylestown, Pa., Plumstead Christian) each had 3 assists while Kelsie Ashley (Landisville, Pa., Hempfield HS) had 1 assist.

Head Coach Rachael Snelgrove was pleased with tonight's match, "It was nice to get a good win today! The girls played hard the entire game. Our forwards were tenacious and played hard. I'm looking forward to taking this momentum to our next game this weekend."

The Highlanders are back in action on Saturday where they will face the Hartwick College Hawks at 11am in Oneonta, NY.
