Ithaca Volleyball Defeats Wells; Houghton Sweeps Alfred

Ithaca 3, Wells 0 The Ithaca College volleyball team (14-19) blanked visiting Wells (5-23), 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-15) Tuesday evening at Ben Light Gymnasium. The non-conference match doubled as senior night and the final regular-season home contest for the Bombers.

Ithaca, who has won six of the last nine, hit .356 for the match, committing just 11 errors on 90 swings.

Senior Justine Duryea (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall Central) matched a career-best with 13 kills while hitting .545 on 22 attempts. Rookie Shaelynn Schmidt (Piney Point, Md./Patuxent) added eight kills and junior Rylie Bean (Blasdell, N.Y./Frontier) chipped in six. Freshman Molly Brown (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) set for 18 assists. Sophomore Carly Garone (East Moriches, N.Y./St. Anthony's) had 16 assists and a match-best nine digs. The setters combined for seven of Ithaca's 11 aces. Brown tallied four and Garone three.

Ithaca opened the first set on a 6-1 run and powered to a double-digit lead, 18-7, en route to a 25-14 victory. The Bombers forced the Express to burn both timeouts with leads of 9-4 and 17-8 in the second stanza. They went on to claim a 25-13, 2-0 series advantage. Ithaca wrapped up the third with a 25-15 win, highlighted by a 7-0 opening run.

The Bombers improve to 8-0 all-time against the Express. The Blue & Gold most recently defeated Wells, 3-0, on Oct. 12 at the Ithaca Tournament.


Houghton 3, Alfred 0
The Houghton Volleyball team got the job done tonight against the Saxons of Alfred University, beating them solidly in three games. 

The Highlanders had a handle on the Saxons the entire match, allowing them to score no more than 16 points in a single game. 

There were two Highlanders that earned a double-double in tonight's game; Sophomore Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) and Senior Jaime Green(Port Huron, MI, New Life Christian). Burgher contributed with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Green was responsible for 30 assists and 16 digs. 

On the offensive end, Meagan Palm (Lakeland, FL, Lakeland Christian) was credited with 9 kills, Jaclyn Algier (Attica, NY, Attica) with 7 kills, and Alicia Needham with 5 kills. Defensively, there were numerous contributors; Laurel Wroblicky (Irvine, CA, Northwood) with 17 digs, Hannah Compeau (Oxford, MI, Faith Baptist) with 13 digs, and Alyssa Quimby (Northglenn, CO, Community Christian) with 10 digs. Burgher had 4 blocks on the night while both Sydney Pow (Port Dover, ON,Canada, ) and Palm had 3 blocks each.
