Stevens Tops Nazareth in E8 Match

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- In a make-up Empire 8 Conference match from earlier this season, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team came away with a 3-1 victory over Nazareth College in Elmira, N.Y. on Thursday evening. Tonight's match was scheduled to be played at Hartwick College in the last conference crossover but was cancelled due to a power outage.
Stevens (16-4, 3-0 Empire 8) took down Nazareth (14-4, 2-1), 27-25, 18-25, 25-15, 25-19, to take over sole possession of first place in the conference.
Senior
Samantha Gates posted a double-double with a match-high 42 assists and 13 digs. Gates also recorded five kills and two service aces. Classmate
Mary Caulson paced Stevens with 12 kills and added seven digs.
Freshmen
Mary Tobin and
Christina Sciarra each registered 10 kills in the victory. Tobin added 18 digs with two aces, while Sciarra hit at a .333 clip and chipped in four digs. Defensively, the Ducks were led by sophomore
Catie Shelton, who led all players with 25 digs.
Three Nazareth players posted double digit kill totals, led by junior
Kassandra Buseck, who had 13 kills in 27 attempts for a .370 hitting percentage. Juniors
Olivia Harrigan and
Maria Allocco each had 10 kills. Harrigan also had 14 digs and freshman
Madi Wickens totaled 38 assists.
