ONEONTA, NY- Visiting Vassar scored twice in the first half and added a third goal in the second as the Brewers came away with a 3-0 victory over Hartwick field hockey on Friday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The Hawks' record falls to 2-8 while the Brewers improve to 5-4.
After over 17 minutes of scoreless play, the Brewers got on the board. Haley Merritt hit a shot that was redirected off the stick of Lauren Wiebe, past Hartwick goalie
Shannon Carter (Falls Church, VA/J.E.B. Stuart), and into the cage.
Tina Caso would score the Brewer's second goal with 6:22 left until halftime on a rebound off of Carter's pad. Vassar held a 7-1 lead in shots in the first period.
The Hawks had an opportunity to get on the board in the 48
th minute. After
Megan Lefeber's (Riverton, CT/Northwestern) penalty corner,
Jessica Ott's (Katonah, NY/John Jay) attempt from near the top of the circle went wide of the goal.
Hiliary Carlson (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) and
Maxine Dunn (Peterborough, NH/Conval) both got off shots but were turned away by Brewer goalkeeper Maggie Brelis.
Later in the 57
th minute, Vassar's Liz Raskoph hit a penalty corner that was taken in by Emma Bracken but
Holley Reynolds (Walton, NY/Walton) was there to prevent Bracken from scoring. The ball eventually made its way back to Raskoph who poked it into the empty cage to push Vassar's lead to 3-0.
'Wick had two attempts to score in the waning seconds of the contest.
Jillian Borntrager's (Salem, NY/Salem Washington Acad.) shot would be stopped by Brelis and
Emily Marcotte's (Corinth, NY/Corinth) attempt went wide of the cage as time expired.
Vassar led the game in total shots, 19-7, and had a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners. 'Wick had four shots on goal compared to nine for the Brewers.
Carter blocked six shots in goal for Hartwick. Brelis had four saves.
The Hawks are back in action tomorrow morning when they will host an Empire 8 match with Elmira. Game time will be at 11 a.m.
