Fisher, Houghton and Stevens Win on Oct 5
St. John Fisher 1, Elmira 0
Chelsea Oberkrieser scored the game's only goal as the St. John Fisher College women's soccer team blanked Elmira College 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Campus Field in Elmira, N.Y.
The first half was played mostly in the neutral area as neither team had many opportunities to put the ball on the net. The Cardinals were able to notch the first and only goal of the game in the 25th minute when Oberkrieser sent a blast from 25 yards out and over Banner's head. The 1-0 score would hold until halftime.
St. John Fisher would outshoot EC 14-3 in the second half, but Banner did her part in net to keep the deficit at one. EC began increasing their offensive pressure with about 15 minutes to go and were almost rewarded with the game-tying goal, however, an offside call negated
Kelsie DeKarski's goal and kept Fisher in the lead. The Cardinals held off the Elmira charge at the end to secure the 1-0 victory.
Brooke Seavitt earned her fourth shutout of the season after recording two saves.
Amanda Banner recorded nine saves on the day for Elmira.
Stevens 3, Hartwick 1
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team tallied its third-straight victory with a 3-1 Empire 8 Conference win over Hartwick College on Homecoming Weekend in Hoboken. Stevens is now 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the Empire 8, while Hartwick falls to 4-4-3, 1-3-1.
The Ducks fell behind the Hawks in the 15th minute after Cristina Sicari stole a failed clear attempt by the Stevens defense which left Sicari one-on-one with sophomore
Evelyn Ting. Sicari beat Ting with a low shot to the right for her first goal of the season.
Ting picked up her third straight victory in goal for the Ducks with three saves in all 90 minutes of action.
Stevens would battle back and notch the equalizer in the 32nd minute on a great display of team work to move the ball down the pitch. Freshman
Delaney West sent a long pass down the left side and found classmate
Raba Nassif just outside the 18-yard box. Nassif then sent a short one-touch cross into the box and found junior
Mariah Cleveland who sent the volley into the net with Hartwick's goalkeeper, Hope Brown, out of position.
After the half, Nassif freed herself up for the game-winner in the 63rd minute, as she crossed her defender over and sent a strike from 20 yards out over Brown's outstretched arms. The tally marks Nassif's second goal this season.
Cleveland picked up her second score of the contest and fifth of the season on a beautiful through ball from freshman
Allison Kopacz that split the defense and allowed Cleveland a 1v1 chance for the insurance goal in the 77th minute.
The Ducks controlled play for a majority of the contest and outshout Hartwick, 19-9. Stevens took 12 first half shots which led to seven corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes and finished the match with eight to just one from the Hawks.
Houghton 7, Alfred 0
Stephany Ellison and Atalie Fite each tallied two goals to lead the Highlander women's soccer team to a 7-0 Homecoming win over Alfred University on Saturday.
It didn't take long for Houghton's leading scorer to get the Highlanders on the board, as Ellison took a perfect centering pass from Amanda Zacchigna and redirected past Alfred keeper Alicia Hanes with just a minute gone in the contest. Erin Miller and Abby Schmidt were each the recipients of passes from Ellison for goals in the 9th and 16th minutes, before Ellison scored her team-leading 8th goal of the campaign off an assist from Fite in the 24th minute.
Fite scored back-to-back goals just a minute apart early in the second half, getting assists from Miller and Sarah Gabriele. Jessica McDowell closed the scoring in the 76th minute.
Shawna Sprout played the first half in goal, with Michelle Mahoney and Andi Atherton also getting time in net.
Houghton held a 30-0 shots advantage as they moved to 8-1-0 on the year. Alfred fell to 3-7-0.
