Stevens Clinches No. 1 Seed in E8

The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team swept Elmira College and Alfred University on Saturday afternoon in Elmira's Speidel Gymnasium to lock up the No. 1 seed in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament on November 9 and 10. With the pair of victories, Stevens is now 19-4 overall and 6-0 in the Empire 8 with one more match remaining on the conference slate.


Stevens 3, Elmira 0
The Ducks earned the straight-sets victory, 25-22, 25-23, 25-14, with a .236 team hitting percentage and seven service aces. Stevens hit below the match percentage in sets one and two, .195 and .169, but figured things out in the final set, hitting .423 with no errors on 11 kills in 26 attempts.

Freshman Mary Tobin played a superb match with 14 kills and no errors. Tobin hit at a .368 clip to go along with 12 digs. Senior Samantha Gates dished out 31 assists and added 13 digs, three service aces and two blocks.

Junior Kirsten Salmins anchored the back row with 27 digs which matches a season-high. 

The Soaring Eagles were led offensively by Taryn Rumsey, who made 14 kills, three aces and 18 digs. In total, four EC players recorded double digit digs with senior libero Catherine Miller leading the charge with 24 digs. 

Stevens 3, Alfred 0
Stevens took care of Alfred in the final contest of the crossover, 25-9, 25-21, 25-18. The Ducks hit .321 in the finale with 33 kills and just six errors on 84 attempts. Stevens also picked up five solo blocks and four block assists against the Saxons.

Tobin was the lone Duck to reach double-digit kills with 10 on 24 swings. On the day, Tobin did not make a single attach error and hit .417 against Alfred.

Gates added 12 more assists before being replaced by junior Ashley Castillo, who notched 13 assists. Shelton also handed out five helpers with a team-high-tying seven digs, as did Castillo.

Alfred was led by seniors Samantha Wood and Chelsea Hall each had three kills.

Hartwick 3, St. John Fisher 1
Hartwick defeated St. John Fisher 3-1 (25-19, 27-25, 21-25, 25-14). The Hawks' 3-1 (25-19, 27-25, 21-25, 25-14) victory over St. John Fisher in the day's opener marks the first over the Cardinals in the history of Hartwick volleyball. It also avenges last season's 3-2 defeat. 'Wick entered the match 0-17 against Fisher since 1995. 

Down 1-0 against Hartwick, the Cardinals rallied in the second set, but came up just short as the Hawks held on for the 27-25 win.  Facing defeat, the Cardinals hunkered down in the third frame, scoring big point after big point for the 25-21 win to force a fourth set. In the deciding set, Hartwick controlled the pace from the get-go, outscoring the Cardinals 25-14 to earn the win.

Taylor Vonasek and Hannah Strom each hit over .300 on the day for Hartwick. Vonasek had nine kills on 19 attacks for a percentage of .368. She would also contribute five blocks. Strom hit .300 with 12 kills on 30 attacks. She would also add 10 digs.

Megan Miller finished with 17 kills and Rachael Kline chipped in with 16 kills to lead the Cardinal attack.

Hartwick 3, Alfred 1
The Hawks downed Alfred (25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 25-14). Strom and Dana Martin each tied for a team-best 11 kills. Strom completed her second straight double-double with 10 digs. Martin would add eight.

Hannah Armstrong and Qunicy Kinzel each missed triple-doubles by narrow margins. Armstrong fell just one kill short of the feat with 22 assists, 10 digs, and nine kills. Kinzel was just three kills short as she notched a team-high 25 assists, 11 digs and seven kills. 

Alfred senior Paige Jensen  had 12 kills and senior Janelle Gallipeau had 37 assists, eight digs and two service aces to pace the Saxons. Senior Core' Oppliger had seven kills and four blocks; senior Kelsey Brand had seven kills; and junior Taylor Kiernan had 21 digs.

St. John Fisher 3, Houghton 1
St. John Fisher defeated Houghton College, 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 27-25, 25-22) as part of the second E8 Crossover. 

Rachael Kline smashed 18 kills, while Megan Miller added 12. Andrea Gillespie finished with 26 digs and Erica Stickler tallied a career-high 45 assits.

Houghton was led by Hattie Burgher who contributed 15 kills and 22 digs, Hannah Compeau with eight kills and 18 digs, and Alyssa Quimby with 12 digs.

Houghton 3, Elmira 2
EC took an early 2-1 lead against the Highlanders of Houghton College.  However, Houghton would rally from the early deficit to claim the final two sets, and the match, 3-2. 

Numerous Highlanders contributed to this victory; Burgher with 17 kills, 19 digs, and 3 blocks, Meagan Palm with 15 kills and 4 blocks, and both Compeau and Jaclyn Algier contributed with 9 kills each. Palm also had 22 digs and Algier blocked 4, while Alicia Needham lead all blockers with an impressive 7 blocks. Jaime Green contributed with 50 assists, 9 digs, and 5 kills, making this her first win against Elmira in 4 years. 

Taryn Rumsey led the team in kills with 29 while rookie Alicia Day posted double-digit kills with 10.  Sami Hanes set-up the Elmira attack, recording a career high 51 assists, bumping her career total 748 which places her 10th in career assists in Elmira College history.

Plattsburgh 3, Nazareth 2
After dropping the first two sets to visiting Plattsburgh, Nazareth rallied to tie Saturday's match at two sets apiece, but the Cardinals held off the Golden Flyers in the fifth set to claim the victory. The scores of the match were 15-16, 25-22, 18-25, 19-25, 15-13. Juniors Chelsea Beecher and Olivia Harrigan each tallied 15 kills to lead Nazareth's attack.

Cassandra Buseck and Maria Allocco finished with 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively. Madi Wickens finished with a match-high 30 assists while Maureen Thayer had 16 assists and a match-high 30 digs.

Buffalo State 3, Nazareth 1
The Golden Flyers fell to Buffalo State by the scores of 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23.

Beecher finished with 19 kills to lead all players. Buseck added 16 kills while Harrigan tallied 15 kills. Allocco also finished in double-digits in kills with 12. Wickens and Thayer recorded match-high totals in assists and digs, respectively. Wickens had 59 assists, and Thayer had 30 digs.

Buffalo State 3, Ithaca 0
The Ithaca College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-14) decision to Buffalo State on day two of Nazareth's 2013 Purple & Gold Invitational in Kidera Gymnasium.

Against the Bengals, freshman Shaelynn Schmidt recorded 15 kills to lead the Bombers offensively. Freshman Molly Browand sophomore Carly Garone split setting duties recording 12 and 11 assists, respectively. Rookie Myan Idziur dug out 13 times and classmate Grace Chang 12. Junior Abbie Hutchinson posted three blocks (1 solo, 2 assists). Buffalo State, who has won eight of its last nine contests, hit .307 for the match and served up nine aces.

Plattsburgh 3, Ithaca 0
The Ithaca College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17) decision to Plattsburgh Saturday on day two of Nazareth's 2013 Purple & Gold Invitational in Kidera Gymnasium.

Schmidt and Chang put down seven kills each. Siobhan Sorensen and Syline Kim added five apiece. Brown set for 16 assists and Garone 11 against the Cardinals. Sophomore Dylan Gawinski Stern dug 12 balls and Idziur tallied 11.
