Cristina Nunez Selected For ITA Small College Championships
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Ithaca College women's tennis player
Cristina Nunez (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) has been invited to participate in the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Championships in the Division III singles bracket. This tournament includes nine of the most outstanding singles players from each of the ITA regions across the United States, and takes place Oct. 10-13 at the Three Oaks Tennis Center in Fort Myers, Fla. In her first match, Nunez will face Michelle Satterfield of Emory at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
The Small College (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College) singles and doubles champions from the USTA/ITA Regional Championships advance to the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships. The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections). Nunez finished as tournament runner-up at the ITA Northeast Regional, which was held Sept. 28-30 at William Smith. Nunez dropped an exciting three-set match that day to eventual champion Brittany LaBruna of William Paterson, but LaBruna declined the invitation to the championships which led to Nunez being invited. Nunez was the top seed at the regional event and is 11-1 overall in singles play this season.
She is the first Ithaca College women's player to qualify for the event and this is just the second time that Ithaca has been represented at the Small College Championships, after the men's doubles team of Taylor Borda '10 and Josh Rifkin '11 qualified in 2009 and placed third overall.
