Men's Soccer Teams 3-0 on Wednesday
Stevens 1, Swarthmore 0
The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team – ranked No. 8 by D3Soccer.com and No. 11 by the NSCAA - improved to 9-1-1 with a 1-0 victory over 14th-ranked Swarthmore College Wednesday night in front of a huge crowd at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
The Ducks donned green jerseys in support of the Wounded Warrior Project – an initiative to help support wounded war heroes upon their return home.
Swarthmore came out early and had the better run of play, generating several early shots but nothing that threatened Stevens goalkeeper
Paul Killian.
The Ducks eventually got their footing, and with 27 minutes left in the opening period as sophomore
Carson Pryor ripped a shot from the upper-left corner of the box that Swarthmore keeper Peter Maxted had to make a beautiful save on, diving to his right to keep the game scoreless.
The two teams went back and forth, using the entire pitch for the balance of the first period, but the Ducks were able to get the all-important first tally with just 1:51 remaining in the half. On the play, sophomore midfielder
Colin Phillips took a corner, and senior back
Zeke Hemme – the reigning Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week – headed it home for the tally.
The Ducks would take the 1-0 lead into the intermission and nearly saw it evaporate early in the second. After a Duck foul, a perfectly lofted free kick found the head of senior Michael Superdock whose bid looked destined for the goal, but Killian's fully outstretched right arm pushed the ball up and over the cross bar. On the ensuing corner, a header from sophomore Alec McClean missed the upper-90 of the left side, and Stevens retained its edge.
Freshman
Patrick Masur nearly put home a cross with 25 minutes remaining, and senior midfielder
Edward Rupp lofted a perfect ball into the middle of the box that found the head of junior
Quinn Conner but the attempt at a two-goal lead sailed high.
Over the final 25 minutes, the Ducks did a nice job maintaining possession and putting the pressure on Swarthmore, giving up very few chances over the midline and letting valuable time expire.
The loss was the first of the season for Swarthmore, falling to 6-1-4 on the year. After two-straight losses to the Garnet in 2008 and 2009, Stevens has earned wins in 2011, 2012 and now 2013. The Ducks won at Swarthmore in overtime last year.
Stevens ended the contest with a 12-7 margin in shots and the Ducks had an 8-4 edge in corners. Killian made two saves to earn his third individual shutout of the year and ninth win. The Ducks now have six shutouts as a team and have allowed just five goals against in 11 matches.
Houghton 5, Alfred State 0
Three freshmen combined to score four goals to the lead the Highlander men's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Alfred State College on Wednesday.
Freshman
Jesse Toth opened the scoring with his first career goal in the ninth minute, taking a pass from
Matt Munkittrick and putting a low shot straight past the Alfred State keeper. The shots continued to come for the Highlanders, but the next goal wasn't until the 27th minute when
Paul Seddon scored to make it 2-0.
The Highlanders had a 17-0 advantage in first half shots and took the 2-0 lead into the break.
Freshman
Landon Sheaffer scored back-to-back markers in the 64th and 66th minutes to give him a team-high seven goals on the season. Fellow first-year player

Houghton finished the game with a 32-1 advantage in shots.
Jacob Dunnett did not face a shot on frame in 76 minutes of action.
Ben Moritz played the final 14 minutes.
