WASHINGTON, Pa. – Freshman forward Amanda Steffey (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored four goals and added one assist to lead Washington & Jefferson past Bethany 6-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday night at Bison Stadium.

The Presidents (12-6) defeated the Bison (2-12) twice this season by a combined 11-1 margin.

Steffey scored twice in the opening 25 minutes for a 2-0 advantage.  Lauren Rao narrowed the gap to 2-1 just over a minute after Steffey’s second goal, but junior midfielder Catherine Beaudoin (Barkhamsted, Conn./North Western Regional) netted a goal on a penalty stroke with five minutes remaining in the half for a 3-1 lead at the break.

Junior forward Miren Zubillaga (Susanville, Calif./Lassen) tapped in a pass from Steffey 11 minutes into the second half for the first goal of her collegiate career.  Steffey closed the scoring with goals at the 46:20 and 66:37 marks.

Steffey upped her season goal total to nine after scoring on four of her nine shot attempts.  Sophomore goalie Kira Bunker (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) made two saves for the Presidents, who owned a 24-7 edge in shots.  W&J also attempted 14 penalty corners.

W&J will close its regular-season Saturday on Senior Day when it hosts Nazareth at 1:00 pm.  The Presidents need a win and an Ithaca loss to Hartwick to earn the fourth and final spot in next week’s Empire 8 Tournament.
