2013 Field Hockey All-Conference Teams Announced

Stevens Institute of Technology placed six student-athletes on the All-Conference teams and earned two of the three major awards as part of the 2013 Empire 8 Field Hockey Awards. Ducks’ forward Marguerite Chavez was named the Player of the Year, while head coach Emily Beach earned the Coach the Year award. Ithaca’s Katie Lass was tabbed the Rookie of the Year.

Chavez, a senior from Oceanport, NJ, adds the Player of the Year honor to her first-team all conference selection. She leads the conference in points (50), goals (17) assists (16) and game winning goals (5). Chavez has registered at least one point in 16-of-19 games played. The three-time E8 all-conference honoree became the all-time leader in points for Stevens during the year and stands at 145.

Lass, a freshman from Cherry Hill, NJ, played all 18 games in goal, compiling a record of 10-8 on the year as the Bombers secured a spot in the Empire 8 playoffs for the first time since 2009. She made a total of 155 saves with a .812 save percentage. Lass recorded double-digit saves eight times, including a season-high 28 against Stevens.

Beach enjoys her first Empire 8 top coaching honor as the Ducks won the Empire 8 regular-season title with a flawless conference mark (7-0).   Stevens ranks third nationally in penalty corners per game (15.26), 14th in assists per game (2.53) and 22nd in points per game (9.79).  The Ducks lead the conference ranks in penalty corners and assists per game while standing second in scoring average (3.632).

One member of each team was named that institution’s representative on the 2013 Field Hockey Sportswoman of the Year Team.  Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen.
