Capital One Academic All-District Honors Seven Football Players
Seven Empire 8 football student-athletes have been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Football Teams.
The teams, which are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. They include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants.
Salisbury’s punter Kyle Hamby was named to the District 2 Team. Hartwick defensive end Joe Seney, Ithaca’s tight end Jared Prugar, offensive lineman Pat Stephenson and defensive back Skylar Griffenberg and St. John Fisher’s offensive lineman Kyle Barry and running back Cody Miller were named to the District 3 team.
Hamby has been one of the most dangerous punters in the nation this season. He currently leads the Empire 8 Athletic Conference and ranks sixth in the nation in punting average, with a 41.6-yard average. Hamby boasts a 3.34 cumulative grade-point average, and is majoring in exercise science.
Seney carries a 3.59 cumulative grade-point average and is a Computer Science and Mathematics double major. He has played in all nine games for the Hawks this season and is the team's third leading tackler with 42. He has seven tackles for loss and leads the Hawks in sacks (6.5) which ties him for second overall in the Empire 8 Conference. His four forced fumbles are first in the E8.
Griffenberg has appeared in all nine games for the Bombers and is the team’s fifth leading tackler with 43 (24 solo). He has two forced fumbles and two tackles for a loss. In the classroom he carries a 3.49 as a health science major.
Prugar has gained 604 yards on 31 catches to go along with five touchdowns in nine games. He is a clinical health studies major with a 3.61 gpa.
Stephenson carries a 3.45 gpa in Business Administration. He has provided an anchoring role in an offense that has 2,848 yards of total offense, which averages to 316.4 yards per game. The offense gets 4.7 yards per play and has 8 touchdowns rushing, while scoring 13 times in the air.
Barry, who owns a 3.68 cumulative grade point average while majoring in management, is a three-year starter on the offensive line. He has started at right tackle in all nine games this year for Fisher (7-2) and has been instrumental in an offense that is averaging 31.9 points per game.
Fisher leads the Empire 8 Conference in total offense (430 yards per game), including a league-high 285 yards through the air.
Miller, Fisher's starting running back for the last three seasons, leads both Fisher and the Empire 8 in rushing yards (779) and touchdowns scored (12).
A childhood/special education major, who boasts a 3.73 GPA, Miller needs just 23 yards to become the fourth running back in Fisher history to rush for over 3,000 yards in a career.
