Nazareth 69, Bard 47  Box
Nazareth defeated Bard 69-47 in the opening game of the Brockport Tip-off Classic, hosted by the Golden Eagles. The Golden Flyers outscored the Raptors 35-20 in the first half to build their advantage. Nazareth finished with three players in double-digits in scoring, led by sophomore Lindsey Kelly, who finished with 15 points. Kelly also had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Golden Flyers opened the contest with a 10-2 scoring run following a three-point basket by sophomore Julia Brew, a layup by classmate Veronica Peck, a three-pointer by senior Megan Morrison, and a jumper by junior Melissa Reeves. Nazareth built its largest lead of the first half, 29-12, with 3:38 remaining in the period after a 6-0 run that spanned roughly two minutes. Ithaca 70, William Smith 61 Box 
The 13th-ranked Ithaca College women's basketball team (1-0) opened its 2013-14 campaign with a 71-60 victory at William Smith (0-1) Friday evening in Bristol Gym. The victory was Ithaca's sixth straight over the Herons in as many seasons.

Winning its season opener for the fourth straight season, Ithaca was led by seniors Kathryn Campbell  and Mary Kate Tierney. Campbell's 18 points were a game-high, while Tierney had a career- and contest-best 14 rebounds and 16 points for her sixth double-double as a Bomber. Tierney chipped in a trio of steals. Junior Samantha Klie added a career-high 13 points and senior Jenn Escobido grabbed nine boards.  FULL STORY


Stevens 71, Eastern 67 Box
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team opened its 2013-14 season with a 71-67 victory over Eastern University on Friday evening at the Morgan Stanley Tip-Off Tournament hosted by DeSales University. Stevens has won four of its past five season openers.

With the game tied at 67-67, sophomore Miranda Ripken drew a foul and sank both free throws with 3.4 seconds remaining in regulation. Ripken then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and made her next two attempts from the line to close out the win, 71-67.

Ripken went 6-for-7 at the line and scored 10 points with five rebounds.

Eastern drained the first basket of the contest from three-point range to take an early 3-0 lead just 28 seconds into the contest. It took the Ducks 2:16 to record its first points of the season on a layup from Ripken. Stevens then went ahead, 4-3, with 17:12 left in the half on a jumper from senior Avis Benjamin and essentially held the lead from there on out. FULL STORY 


St. Joseph's 54, St. John Fisher College 42 Box
The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team dropped its season-opener on Friday, losing 54-42 to St. Joseph's College of Maine in the Curry College Tip-Off Invitational.  With the loss, Fisher will now play at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the consolation game.

The Cardinals never led in the game, but stay with the Monks early on.  A layup from Camaryn Buckner midway the first half made the score, 11-9.   Fisher trailed 19-14 with 8:10 left after a jumper from Mary Kate Cusack, but St. Joseph's closed out the half with a 10-3 run and led 29-17 at the break.  FULL STORY


Concordia 88, Houghton 42 Box 
The 2013-14 season got off to a rocky start for the Houghton Highlander women's basketball program as the team dropped an 88-42 decision to Concordia College (Minn.) on the first day of the Buffalo State College Betty Abgott Invitational on Friday night.

The Cobbers jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Houghton freshman Hannah Manwaring(Barton, NY, Tioga Central ) scored her first career bucket on a three pointer just a minute and a half in. The Cobbers would hit four of their own three pointers over the game's first eight minutes as the lead grew to 30-8.

Concordia, who finished 21-7 a year ago and made an appearance in the NCAA Divison III playoffs, used strong defensive pressure, hot shooting and their height advantage to push the lead to 52-18 at the half.

With adjustments made in the locker room, the Highlanders started the second half on an 8-0 run, forcing the Cobbers to call a timeout. The Cobbers responded with six-straight points and used a 16-4 run to up their advantage to 69-30 with 11 minutes to play. The lead grew to as many as 48 down the stretch. FULL STORY  


Penn State Behrend 59, Alfred 47 Box
 The Alfred University women's basketball team opened the 2013-2014 season at the Behrend Tip-Off Tournament with a 59-47 loss to hosting Penn St.-Behrend, Friday evening.

The Lions increased the pace of play halfway through the first half and went on a 10-0 run with 12:52 left in the first half. The Lady Saxons trailed 30-17 at halftime.

A layup from freshman forward Amanda Off with ten minutes remaining in the match brought AU within five points at 38-33. Penn St.-Behrend then called a timeout helping them to reestablish the lead, putting the game out of reach for Alfred.  FULL STORY
