Elmira Claims Second Place In ECAC Championship

The Elmira College women's volleyball team (22-13) defeated Merchant Marine Academy (12-6) 3-0 in the Semi-Finals of the ECAC Tournament earlier today, but fell to Kean University (24-14) 0-3 in the Championship game to claim second place. Taryn Rumsey '14 led the Soaring Eagles today with 30 kills, 10 digs, one ace and one block assist in today's action.

Game One Recap
Elmira 3, Merchant Marine Academy 0 – 25-10, 25-10, 25-9

The Purple and Gold took control of the first set early as they started with a 7-0 run and went on to finish the set with a 10-1 run. The second and third sets were similar as they only let up a combined 19 points. Rumsey led the team offensively with 21 kills and added two digs, an ace and one block assist. Sami Hanes '16 helped out with 28 assists, five digs and three aces while Catherine Miller '14 led the team defensively with 18 digs and posted three aces and three assists today.

Game Two Recap
Elmira 0, Kean 3 – 18-25, 22-25, 18-25

The EC women battled back and forth with Kean in the first set and found themselves down by only two points when Kean went on a 7-2 run to close out the set. The Purple and Gold regrouped and battled back in the second set as the score was tied 12 different times and the lead changed five times. Elmira was leading 20-19 before Kean went on a 5-2 run to close out the second set. Elmira started the third set getting four straight points before Kean had to call a timeout. After the timeout the two teams battled until they found themselves both tied at 9 apiece. However Kean would not look back as they closed out the set 25-18. Rumsey led the team with nine kills and eight digs while Ashley Heiman '16 and Paola Ortiz '16 helped out by combining to get 16 kills. Hanes posted 30 assists, six digs and two block assists while Miller once again led defensively with 19 digs in Championship game.

This tournament marks the last games of the 2013 season for the women's volleyball team. The team finished with a 22-14 overall record and a 4-3 record in the Empire 8 Conference.
