UNION, N.J. (November 17, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team was defeated by a score of 1-0 in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Mid-Atlantic Championship game Sunday.
The Ducks, who were playing for their second-straight and second overall ECAC title, finish the year with a record of 14-8. Stevens has now finished .500 or better in seven-straight seasons dating back to 2007, reaching the postseason in each campaign as well.
Alvernia (14-7) held a 19-16 margin in shots with each team making 11 saves overall. The Crusaders also held a 7-6 margin in penalty corners.
"Today was a great battle between two very strong teams," said Head Coach
Emily Beach (Hoboken, N.J.). "A lot of credit to Alvernia, they were very athletic and tough to defend."
Stevens goalkeeper
Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.) played a strong game in goal for the Ducks despite the loss, making 11 saves. Junior Erin Wunsch (Long Valley, Pa.) made 10 stops for Alvernia.
The game-winner was recorded by the Crusaders with 1:59 left in the contest on a broken corner. The marker was credited to freshman Margaret Wentzel (East Earl, Pa.), and the assist went to senior Kyle Dillman (Lower Dauphin, Pa.).
The contest was the last for six Stevens seniors in
Katie Achilles (Portsmouth, N.H.),
Marguerite Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.),
Rachel Chavez (Oceanport, N.J.),
Chelsea Cresci (Wilmington, Del.),
Grace Ridge (Moorestown, N.J.) and
Megan Traub (Berkeley Heights, N.J.). The group won one Empire 8 title, one NCAA Tournament game, an ECAC title and went 53 games over the last four seasons.
"This team has been an absolute pleasure to work with," added Beach. "We will miss our six seniors tremendously, and I would like to thank them for their dedication to the program over the last four years."
