Nazareth 92, Fredonia 62
Tournament MVP
Brad Ford scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for host Nazareth Saturday to lead the Golden Flyers to a 92-62 men's basketball victory over Fredonia in the championship game of the BSG Tip-Off Tournament at the Kidera Gymnasium.
Combined with Friday's win over Sage Colleges, Nazareth improved to 2-0. Fredonia is 1-1. Sage defeated Union, 98-73, in the consolation game.
Ford scored 20 of his points in the first half as the Golden Flyers were building their lead. They led 39-32 at halftime and outscored the Blue Devils 53-30 over the final 20 minutes. Four others also scored in double figures for the Golden Flyers, including all-tournament team selections
Jack Giles and
Mitch Ford. Giles had 17 points and four assists and hit three three-point baskets. Mitch Ford had 12 poiints and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Sophomore
Maurice Mills added 16 points and senior
Scott Hayford had 11.
Nazareth began to pull away late in the first half. The score was tied at 17-17 before a basket by Mills triggered a 7-0 scoring run that put Nazareth ahead to stay. Brad Ford hit a three-pointer and Mitch Ford sank a pair of free throws to complete the mini-surge. Nazareth's lead grew to 10 points, 39-29, with less than a minute to play in the half, but Fredonia's John Kovach hit a free throw and Eric Zwierlein added a basket in the closing seconds to trim the lead to 39-32 at the break.
Nazareth then dominated the second half as the Golden Flyers reopened their double-digit lead by hitting 18 of 26 second-half field goal attempts and 14 of 18 free throws. Giles scored 15 of his points in the final 20 minutes, including all three of his three-point baskets.
Tyrone Clark (20 points) and Robert Lyles (10 points) represented the Blue Devils on the all-tournament team. Mason Horne of Sage also made the all-tournament team.
Nazareth shot 30 for 56 (53.6 percent) for the game and 26 for 32 (81.3 percent) from the free-throw line. Nazareth also enjoyed a 44-24 rebounding advantage.
Ithaca 60, Swarthmore 51
The Ithaca College men's basketball team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Swarthmore by a score of 60-51 in the final game of the Equinox Classic.
Senior
Frank Mitchell (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) led all Bombers with 23 points, while freshman
Leonard Davis (Denver, Colo./East) added 13 points in just his second career game. Mitchell completed the double-double with 10 rebounds, adding three steals and one block on the day. Sophomore
Sam Bevan (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) also contributed with 11 points, three assists, one block and one steal.
The Bombers shot 18-of-36 from the field, including two three pointers on 11 attempts. Ithaca led in points off turnovers, earning 16 compared to Swarthmore's 10. The Bombers also secured more points in the paint, scoring 24 to Swarthmore's 18.
The game went back-and-forth in the opening frame, as neither team was able to secure more than a five point lead for the majority of the half. Ithaca did pull ahead by six points in the closing seconds, taking advantage of a steal by Bevan and three-straight points from Davis to close the half.
The Bombers never relinquished their lead in the final frame, as strong defense and consistent scoring secured Ithaca's 60-51 win.
Alfred 116, Cobleskill 102
The Alfred University men's basketball team opened the 2013-2014 season against Cobleskill State on Saturday afternoon in the Mclane Center. The Saxons topped the visiting Fighting Tigers, 116-102.
AU went on a 17-0 run with nine minutes remaining in the first half to give them a 37-30 lead after reversing a nine point deficit. Senior forward
Gerald Colas (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) paced the Saxons with 16 points in the first half. Alfred went into halftime ahead 61-40.
Alfred continued the scoring at the start of the second half, increasing their lead to 83-53 five minutes past the start of the half. Cobleskill came within seven points from the 30 point deficit with seven minutes left in regulation, but would get no closer.
For the game, both teams shot 51 percent from the field and 40 percent beyond the arc. Cobleskill held a slight, 69 percent to 68 percent, advantage from the free throw line.
Colas finished with a team-high 18 points (six rebounds). Senior guard
Thomas Tsatsis (Neponsit, NY/Townsend Harris) and junior forward
Jeremy Johnson (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg (Shepard Univ.)) both finished with 13 points apiece and freshman guards
Tyler Seelman (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Secondary) and
Dylan Molloy (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) both scored 12 and 11 points. Johnson pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
The Fighting Tigers were led by Brandon Smith who scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Alex Nunez scored 22 points and four other Cobleskill players scored over 10 points.
