Alfred Wins; Rest of E8 Teams Fall on Tuesday Night
Alfred 88, Wells 58 (Box)
The Alfred University women's basketball team improved to 1-2 (0-0 Empire 8) Tuesday evening at the McLane Center, with an 88-58 victory over visiting Wells College.
Alfred established a commanding 15 point lead (31-16) with eight minutes left in the first half after senior guard Rachael Stedman converted a three-point play from a made basket and foul shot conversion. AU led Wells 49-27 at intermission.
The Lady Saxons built off the lead throughout the second half and the Express trailed no less than 18 points. For the game, Alfred outshot Wells from the field (42 percent), beyond the arc (28 percent), and from the free throw line (78 percent). FULL STORY
Fredonia 78, Nazareth 70 (Box)
Visiting Fredonia rallied from a double-digit second-half deficit against Nazareth in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday to defeat the Golden Flyers, 78-70, at the Kidera Gymnasium. Sophomore Lindsey Kelly paced Nazareth with 18 points, but Fredonia's Becky Hebert combined game highs in points (25) and rebounds (11).
After trailing early on, Nazareth rallied to take a 36-32 halftime lead and then expanded that advantage to as many as 12 points, 52-40, with less than 13 minutes to play. The Blue Devils rallied as Hebert scored 19 of her points after the intermission and Jaimie Wright added 11 of her 22.
Fredonia tied the score at 62-62 on a free throw by Sabrina Macauley, who finished with 15 points. Hebert, who went 11-for-11 from the free throw line, then hit a pair of foul shots with 4:04 left to give the Blue Devils the lead for good at 64-62. FULL STORY
RIT 78, Houghton 65 (Box)
he Houghton Highlanders' Women's Basketball team fell short to the Tigers of Rochester Institute of Technology, losing 78-65 in Tuesday night's game.
Within the first 5 seconds of the game, the Tigers managed to score on a layup. The Tigers then proceed to take a 6-0 lead. In the second minute of the game, it was a jumper by
Kristen Moose (Swain, NY, Canaseraga HS) that broke the silence.
In the first half of the game, the Highlanders managed to score only 33.3% of the shots they took. Their 3-point opportunities, however, were more in their favor with 4 out of 9 shots deemed as successful. The first 20 minutes of the game was also a defensive struggle for the Highlanders, being out-rebounded 28-13.
It was in the second half when the Highlanders had the opportunity to redeem themselves, out-rebounding the Tigers 28-17. It was
Maisie Pipher (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian) that led the Highlanders in rebounds, with 4 offensive rebounds and 5 defensive rebounds, for a total of 9 on the night. Pipher also contributed all of the Highlander blocks, with 3.

Oneonta 59, Utica 42 (Box)
The Utica College women's basketball team dropped a 59-43 decision at host Oneonta State on Tuesday night. The Pioneers were led by 11 points and nine rebounds from Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills), while sophomore Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) added a team-best 14 points and five rebounds.
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) chipped in with four points, five rebounds and two assists, while Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville), Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) and Kelsey Cowell (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) each added three poitns off the bench for Utica. Cortland 68, Elmira 41 (Box)
It was a tough shooting night for the Elmira College women's basketball team (1-2) as they fell to Cortland State (2-1) 68-41. Jessica Zoltowski '14 led the Soaring Eagles with 10 points, but was the only EC player in double digits as the Purple and Gold shot just 28.9 percent from the field.
The Soaring Eagles faced an uphill battle almost from the opening tip as Cortland took a one point lead at the 17:24 mark and never looked back. The Red Dragons used a 13-7 run to break open a nine point lead, but the Purple and Gold would respond with a run of their own to cut the lead to three after an Elizabeth Forrest '14 layup with 4:47 left in the opening half. Cortland would regroup over the final minutes of the half to halt EC's run and take a nine point lead into the locker room. FULL STORY
