Ithaca 3, Hartwick 1
The Ithaca College field hockey team (10-6, 4-3 E8) defeated Hartwick (5-13, 1-6 E8) Saturday afternoon, beating the Hawks by a score of 3-1 at Higgins Stadium. The win secures a spot in the Empire 8 Playoffs for the Bombers, marking their first return to the conference tournament since 2009. Senior Katie Kennedy led the Bombers with two goals, while sophomore Olivia Salindong added one score in the victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Katie Lass made one save on two shots, pushing her overall record to 10-6 on the year.

After a scoreless 35 minutes of play, Hartwick struck first on a penalty corner at the end of the opening half. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime, despite being outshot, 14-3, in the first frame.

Ithaca responded in force in the second half. Just under four minutes into the final period, junior Danielle Coiro sent a pass across the slot after sustained pressure in the offensive zone. Kennedy collected the pass and beat the Hartwick goalkeeper for her first score of the day.

Ithaca struck again in the 57th minute, giving the Bombers their first lead of the day. Senior Lindsay Flanagan sent a pass to the top of the slot on a penalty corner, finding Salindong all alone for a shot. Salindong's shot made its way through a crowd and into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

With just over 12 minutes to play in the game, Kennedy netted her second of the day on a fantastic individual effort in front after an offensive rush. Kennedy's goal marked her ninth score of the season and gave the Bombers the 3-1 advantage.

Hartwick was unable to score again, giving the Bombers their 10th win of the season. The victory wrapped up regular season conference play for Ithaca, and marked one of the final home games for seniors Flanagan, Kennedy, Andrea Pace and Emily Lash.


Houghton 2, Elmira 1
The Highlander Field Hockey team took care of business on Saturday when they played the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College. The seniors went out in style, beating the Soaring Eagles 2-1; Senior night was a success!

The following seniors were honored at today's game: Tatum McLeodAdria Bridgwood,  Maesa PhongsamouthJenna Newcombe, and Marissa Meassick.

Goalie Emily Thompson was 4 for 5 on saves, allowing for Elmira's lone goal to be scored in the second half.

The Highlanders created a lot of offensive opportunities, creating 12 shots; 7 of which were shot-on-goals. The first Highlanders goal was scored by Phongsamouth on a penalty stroke in the first half, giving Phongsamouth her 12th goal of the season . The second Highlander goal was scored 8 minutes into the second half by Colleen Sullivan, assisted by Newcombe. This marks Sullivan's 6th goal of the season.


Utica 7, Brockport 1
Five different players scored to help the Utica College field hockey team cruise to a 7-1 victory over SUNY Brockport in non-conference action at Charles A. Gaetano stadium Saturday afternoon. 

Junior Hannah Mackey netted two goals and classmate Angela Charles added her fourth of the year to put Utica up 3-0 at halftime. Adriana Surprenant continued the momentum into the second half as she netted back-to-back goals less than five minutes apart to pad the Pioneer lead. Juniors Nikki Kieffer and Chasity Eckert hooked up for the Pioneers' final two tallies. Eckert fed Kieffer for her first goal of the year, while Kieffer returned the favor just three minutes later.

Lindsay JamesColleen Dowling, Louise Steele-Norton, and Angela Charles also added one assist each on the day. Brockport's Jackie Massoni spoiled the shutout with 1:41 left to play as she put in a rebound off Jessica's Blind's shot. 

Sophomore Kells Casey had six saves in the win, while Lindsay Farrell and Kayla Kulzer combined for seven saves for the Golden Eagles. With two goals, Hannah Mackey moved into second place on UC's career scoring list with 114 points. She sits seven points behind classmate Louise-Steele-Norton on the all-time list. 

Before the game, the Pioneers recognized their five seniors, Lindsay JamesMeghan MorrealeJessica FranklinAlly Sanders, and Marissa Davendonis who have helped UC to a 48-27 record over the last four seasons. 


Washington & Jefferson 4, Nazareth 1

Junior Catherine Beaudoin registered her first career hat trick as the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team took down Nazareth 4-1 on senior day Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium.

The Presidents finish the regular season with a 13-6 overall record and a 3-4 mark in Empire 8 action. Despite today’s victory, W&J was eliminated from E8 postseason play by way of an Ithaca win against Hartwick this afternoon.

Beaudoin began the home scoring in the 10th minute when she chipped in a high backhanded shot over the Golden Flyers’ (4-14, 2-5 Empire 8) goalkeeper. Just a few minutes had ticked away when W&J got its second goal of the game, this time off the stick of freshman Lauren Brown (Novi, Mich./Novi). Brown’s tally was the third goal of her rookie campaign.

As time ticked to just under two minutes remaining in the first half, Beaudoin notched her second goal of the game on a successful penalty stroke. That provided the Presidents with a 3-0 lead heading into the break.

In the 48th minute of the contest, Beaudoin scored W&J’s fourth goal, finding the back of the cage off a rebound. She finishes the season with 14 goals, doubling her goal output from last season and setting a new single season career-high mark.

Nazareth was able to get on the board and break up the shutout at 55:48 when Jordan Ritchie beat W&J goalkeeper Kira Bunker.

Bunker needed to make just one save in her 70 minutes out on the field and improved her record to 5-2 on the year. The Presidents outshot the Golden Flyers 18-5 and forced Nazareth’s goalkeeper duo to make a total of 10 saves.


St. John Fisher 4, St. Lawrence 2
The St. John Fisher College field hockey team used three second half goals to defeat visiting Saint Lawrence University 4-2 Saturday at Growney stadium in the Cardinals final regular season game.

With the win, Fisher, competing in just its third season as an NCAA Division III program continues to increase the College-record for wins in a season. The Cardinals now sit at 9-9 overall.

With the score tied at one following the first half Fisher scored back-to-back goals just over one minute apart to take a 3-1 lead.

Elizabeth Cusack started the run for the Cardinals six minutes into the half, on an assist from Bailee Barrett.

Shortly after, Marissa Vedella netted an unassisted goal for her second goal of the game to give Fisher the 3-1 lead.

Less than five minutes later the Cardinals found the back of the net again as Caitlin Allen fed Stacie Skidmore for the insurance goal.

The Saints scored late in the game to cut the lead to 4-2 but could not muster a comeback.

Vedella started off the scoring for Fisher 16 minutes into the first half, with the assist credited to Alexandrea Malley. The junior now has seven goals on the season.

Danielle Famolaro made four saves in net for the Cardinals.


Skidmore 9, Stevens 4
The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team dropped its regular-season finale at No. 14 Skidmore College, 9-4, snapping a five-game winning streak.
 
The Ducks will host the Empire 8 Championship Saturday and Sunday at the De Baun Athletic Complex. Stevens will play St. John Fisher in one semifinal with seeceond-seeded Utica and Ithaca squaring off in the other semifinal.
 
Skidmore scored the final three goals of the game for the final margin after a back-and-forth contest. Senior forward Marguerite Chavez sored in the 11th minute to tie the game one, after a cross from her sister Rachel Chavez.
 
Skidmore ran off two-straight markers 1:05 apart, with senior back Grace Ridge bringing Stevens within two at 22:31.
 
Following a Skidmore score to close the first-half scoring, Chavez tallied for Stevens to make it a 4-3 contest on the back of a Ridge helper, giving each player three points on the day.
 
From that point, Skidmore score five of the game's final six goals for the win. Sophomore midfielder Erin Silvestri scored with 16:17 to go in the game, to get Stevens back within two goals at 6-4, but the Ducks were unable to get any closer.
 
Skidmore had a 32-11 margin in shots, as Ducks goalkeeper Emily Stukenborg made a career-high 13 denials. Skidmore also held an 11-4 edge in penalty corners.
