Stevens and Ithaca Win on Wednesday
Stevens 48, Penn State Wilkes-Barre
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 48-32 victory over Penn State University Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday evening in Lehman, Pa. Eighteen Stevens players saw the court on Wednesday, while 10 Ducks scored at least two points.
The 32 points allowed is the 10th lowest points surrendered by a Stevens' team since 2002-03 and Wilkes-Barre shot just 24-percent in the contest. In 2011-12, the Ducks gave up just 12 points to Wheelock College which is the fewest points allowed in that time span.
Stevens also struggled offensively, shooting just 25-percent from the field (17-for-68), but was the beneficiary of 16 offensive rebounds (42 total), which almost matched Wilkes-Barre's total of 20 in the contest.
Senior
Avis Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.) led the Ducks with eight points, while freshmen
Erica Guketlov (Spotswood, N.J.) and
Brittany Washington (Iselin, N.J.) pitched in seven a piece. Benjamin pulled down five rebounds in nine minutes, Guketlov recorded three steals and Washington made three free throws in six minutes on the court.
Senior
Molly Spadaro (Sewell, N.J.) grabbed a game-high seven boards with four points and freshman
Hannah Brophy (Bridgewater, N.J.) went 3-for-6 from the floor for six points.
Ithaca 74, Rochester 61
The 13th-ranked Ithaca College women's basketball team (2-0) used 14 unanswered in the second half to power to a 74-61 victory over visiting Rochester (1-2) Wednesday night in Ben Light Gymnasium.
Ithaca snapped a 32-32 halftime deadlock outscoring Rochester 42-29 in the latter half to claim its second straight victory over the Yellowjackets.
The first half was knotted on seven occasions with neither team holding more than a four-point edge. The game was tied for the eighth and final time at the 14:40 mark of the second. A
Jenn Escobido (Lisbon, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) jumper a minute later tipped off a 14-0 Bomber run that took three minutes off the clock.
The Yellowjackets used a 7-1 stretch to pull within nine, 63-54, at 3:31, but the Bombers answered with five straight and held strong down the stretch for the double-digit win.
Escobido drained a team-high 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting and grabbed a game-best eight boards. Junior
Francesca Cotrupe (Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) added 14 points and five boards, while senior
Elisabeth Wentlent (Greene, N.Y./Greene) scored nine points. Senior
Mary Kate Tierney (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) had five assists and three steals to go with an eight-point performance.
The Bombers shot 45.1 percent from the floor in its home opener and outrebounded the Yellowjackets, 38-31.
