Roberts Wesleyan Ends Highlanders' Season
HOUGHTON, N.Y.—The Houghton Volleyball team came out of the gates on Saturday with great enthusiasm and excitement in hopes of competing at the NCCAA National Tournament. Today's NCCAA Regional Championship was between your very own Houghton Highlanders and the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College.
At the conclusion of the match it was revealed, however, that the Redhawks of Roberts Wesley College would be the ones to compete for a national championship, beating the Highlanders in 3 games; 25-22, 25-7, and 25-15.
At the very start of the first game of tonight's match, the Highlanders took the lead over the Redhawks. The Highlanders managed to either continue the lead or tie with the Redhawks all the way up until the very last few serves of the game.
The fire that was evident in the first game managed to dissipate in the second game. The Highlanders struggled defensively, giving the Redhawks a 2-0 lead in tonight's match.
The third game was one of survival, yet the Highlanders did not make it easy on the Redhawks. The Highlander never gave up; they worked extremely hard up to the last serve.
In tonight's match,
Hannah Compeau (Oxford, MI, Faith Baptist) had 9 kills while
Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) had 8 kills. On the defensive end,
Jaclyn Algier (Attica, NY, Attica) had an impressive 4 blocks while
Alicia Needham (Tustin, CA, Tustin H.S.) was a close second with 3. Burgher had 12 digs while
Laurel Wroblicky (Irvine, CA, Northwood) had 22 digs.
Tonight's match marks the end of the Highlanders 2013 season, with a record of 20-11.
