E8 Athletes of the Week: Nov. 4
Student-athlete performances continue to show quality as the Cross Country championship is now in the books and the regular seasons for field hockey, soccer and volleyball wrap up. Those earning honors for the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3 include:
Football Offensive Player - St. John Fisher
Tyler Fenti, Senior, QB - Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeye Falls-Lima
Senior Quarterback Tyler Fenti helped the Cardinals overcome a 20-point deficit in the first half en route to a 28-27 win against the Utica College Pioneers. Fenti completed the game with an impressive line including 24-33 passing for 203 yards and three touchdowns. The Honeoye Falls native also rushed for 56 yards on 11 carries.
Football Defensive Player – Ithaca
Will Carter, Graduate Student, LB – Thornwood, NY/Westlake
Will Carter led an excellent defensive effort in Ithaca's 23-0 shutout of Frostburg with a career-high 15 tackles including two sacks and three tackles for loss. Ithaca's defense had one interception, five sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and limited Frostburg State to 86 total yards (51 rushing, 35 passing. Frostburg State entered the game averaging 26.4 points per game and 415 yards per game.
Football Special Teams Player - Hartwick
Alex Tesoriero, Senior, Kicker – Rensselaer, NY/Columbia
Alex Tesoriero connected on all five of his extra point attempts in Hartwick's loss to Buffalo State. He also had two touchbacks and successfully executed an onside kick that was recovered.
Field Hockey Offensive Player – Ithaca
Katie Kennedy, Senior, M/F – Clay, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse
Senior Katie Kennedy led the Bombers with two goals on Saturday, helping Ithaca to a 3-1 win over Hartwick. Kennedy's goal output helped secure a spot for the Bombers in the Empire 8 Playoffs for the first time since 2009.
Field Hockey Defensive Player – Elmira
Lauren Thomas, Senior, Goalie – Marshfield, MA/Marshfield
Lauren Thomas totaled 21 saves in the Elmira cage in two games this past week. She stopped 16 shots against #18 Rochester and another five shots in the season finale against Houghton.
Men’s Cross Country Runner – Stevens
Michael Cahill, Senior – Clark, NJ/Union Catholic
Senior Michael Cahill won the Empire 8 Conference individual title at Saratoga Springs State Park on Saturday. His victory was a convincing one where he went straight to the front and won by 48 seconds. The time of 25:36 for 8K is the second fastest of his career and a 19-second personal record on the Saratoga Springs course. Cahill is the first Stevens runner in men's Empire 8 history to win the title.
Women’s Cross Country Runner – Stevens
Amy Regan, Sophomore – Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills)
For the second-straight season, sophomore Amy Regan took home the individual title at the Empire 8 Conference Championship at Saratoga Springs State Park on Saturday. Regan blew away the field by 25 seconds with a time of 17:29.0 to break the conference meet record. She now becomes the third runner to win back-to-back titles at the Empire 8 Championship. This was her fifth win of the season and she continued her unbeaten streak against NCAA DIII competition.
Men’s Soccer Offensive Player – Nazareth
Scott Duarte, Senior, Forward - Cranston, RI/Bishop Hendricken
Scott Duarte found the back of the net for the first time this season and did so in a big way as he recorded a hat-trick and added an assist Saturday as Nazareth defeated Alfred, 5-1, to clinch the fourth seed in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament. The first half featured four goals, including two by Duarte. Duarte scored his first goal 13:32 into the contest and added his second goal about five minutes later. He completed the scoring in the 67th minutes as he capitalized on a deflected shot.
Men’s Soccer Defensive Player – Utica
Anthony Caruso, Senior, Goalie – Easton, CT/Joel Barlow
Anthony Caruso had five saves in a 2-1 win over Elmira as the Pioneers locked up their first trip to the postseason since 2010. Caruso bought time for the Pioneers to build and maintain a healthy lead, as he did not allow a goal until there were less than two minutes remaining in the contest.
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player – St. John Fisher
Taryn Guinta, Freshman, Midfield – Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville
Taryn Guinta scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime period as the St. John Fisher College women's soccer team defeated nationally-ranked Ithaca College 2-1 to clinch the final berth in the Empire 8 Championship. Guinta's goal came in the 106th minute of play as Fisher held the No. 5 Bombers scoreless for nearly 50 minutes of play, snapping the Bombers ten-game win streak.
Women’s’ Soccer Defensive –Stevens
Evelyn Ting, Sophomore, Goalie – Gaithersburg, MD/Thomas W. Wooton
Evelyn Ting picked up two victories in the final two matches of the regular season for Stevens with 13 total saves. She posted a shutout and six saves vs. West. Conn State on 10/31 and then made seven more against Elmira on 11/2 in a 2-1 win.
Women’s Volleyball Player – Nazareth
Kassandra Buseck, Junior, RS-OH – Johnstown, NY/Johnstown
Kassandra Buseck helped Nazareth split four matches at the New York Regional Challenge over the weekend as the Golden Flyers went 3-2 on the week. She amassed 72 kills (3.6 per set) for a .387 hitting percentage to go with 12 blocks. Buseck highlighted her week with a career best 23-kill performance in a five-set loss to NYU. She tallied 19 kills and five blocks in a five-set win over Geneseo and posted 13 kills in sweep of St. Lawrence.
Women’s Volleyball Rookie – Nazareth
Madi Wickens, Freshman, Setter – Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy
Madi Wickens totaled 106 assists (7.57 per set) in four matches over the weekend as Nazareth went 2-2 at the New York Regional Challenge at RIT. Earlier in the week she dished out 47 assists in a five-set win against Geneseo.
Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Hartwick
Brad Ranson, Senior – Pennington, NJ/ Hopewell Valley
Brad Ranson won three events for lead the Hartwick men to a 176-112 victory over the University of Rochester on Saturday. He posted wins in the 200 free (1:45.94), 50 free (21.60), and the 100 free (48.11). Ranson was also a member of the second place 400 Free Relay with an anchor 100 Free split time of 46.87.
Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Hartwick
Gwen Mathias, Junior - Sunland, CA/Southwestern Academy
Gwen Mathias was the winner of the 1000 Free (10:56.53), the 500 Free (5:24.95) events against Rochester on Saturday. She also posted a second place finish in the 200 Backstroke (2:14.44) and was a member of the second place 400 Free Relay team with a 100 Free anchor split time of 56.74.
