HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton men's soccer got retribution for one of its two losses on the season, closing the regular season with a 2-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan College at home Thursday.

The Highlanders, who lost to the Redhawks 2-0 earlier in the season in Rochester, had control of this one from the start in front of the home fans. And the gamewinning goal came early. Finding space in the left corner, Highlander forward Kevin Miranda (Jupiter, FL, Jupiter) sent a perfectly placed cross to the front of the goal, but a Roberts' defender slid in to clear the pass and sent the ball straight to the back of the net.

The hosts would hold that 1-0 lead to halftime, and went into the break with a 5-1 edge in shots. Once the second half started, it didn't take long for the Highlanders to get a much-needed insurance goal. With just 50 seconds gone in the half, Landon Sheaffer (Richfield, PA, East Juniata) headed a cross from Mitch Beattie (Maitland, Ontario, St. Mary Catholic) to the leg of Paul Seddon (Wirral, England, Birkenhead Sixth Form), and the senior delivered on his seventh goal of the campaign.

Houghton finished the contest with a 14-6 advantage in shots.

Jacob Dunnett (Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Kennebecasis) registered his 12th (and the team's 13th) shutout of the season with three saves on the night.

The Highlanders (15-2-1) now move on to the NCCAA National Championship Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla., December 2-7.
