Cardinals and Pioneers Lose
Hamilton 60, Utica 44
The Hamilton College women's basketball team (3-3) held visiting Utica College under 30 percent shooting, snapping the Pioneers' two-game winning streak with a 60-44 win Sunday afternoon at Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.
Utica's
Bridget Greenwald (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills), the nation's 18th-leading rebounder, led all players with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Kelsey Cowell (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) pulled down eight rebounds for the Pioneers, who owned a 44-36 advantage on the boards.
The Continentals held Utica (2-3) to 10 points over the first 12 minutes of play, hitting their first five three-point attempts to open up a 20-7 lead. Hamilton, who never trailed, led by nine points within the first 3:27 and took a double-digit lead just four minutes in on a three-point basket by Serena Ward '16. Utica pulled to within single digits just once for the rest of the game, when a three-point play by
Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk) made the score 16-7 6:44 into the half.
After limiting the Pioneers to 32.0 percent shooting from the floor in the first half (8-25), the Continentals did even better in the second period, holding Utica to 27.6 percent accuracy (8-29).
Dani Feigin scored 15 points – including four three-point baskets --- and contributed two assists and two steals for Hamilton.
The Pioneers were only outscored by one point, 21-20, in the second half, but they could not overcome their halftime deficit in the 16 point loss.
Hamilton held the Pioneers' leading scorer,
Mary Miceli (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle), to five points – 16 points below her season average – on two-of-13 shooting from the floor and kept her scoreless for the game's first 25 minutes.
Marissa Kahane (Sayville, NY/Sayville) and
Adriana Surprenant (Utica, NY/New York Mills) each tallied three points off the bench for the Pioneers, while Traglia added six. Freshman
Calypso Carty (Pipersville, PA/Central Bucks West) got the start for the Pioneers and grabbed four rebounds.
Union 67, St. John FIsher 63
The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team fell in a thriller to Union College 67-63 in the championship game of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Invitational Sunday afternoon.
Trailing 65-63 with 6.9 seconds to go, Fisher missed two free throws. Union grabbed the rebound on the second miss and sealed the game with two free throws on the other end.
After trailing 39-35 at half Union would extend their lead to as many as 10 points with 12 minutes remaining in the second half. But Fisher would not go away quietly. Down five with just under three minutes remaining,
Camaryn Buckner netted two foul shots and
McKenzie Bezon knocked down a corner 3 to tie the game, 61-61.
Fisher lead by as many as nine at 25-16 with 8:39 remaining in the first half, but Union closed out the half with a 23-10 run to take a 39-35 lead at the break..
Buckner finished a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds, while
Mary Kate Cusack added 10 points in the loss. Both were named to the all-tournament team. Bezon and
Portia Velasco both tallied eight points.
