CANTON, N.Y.-- The Highlander women's basketball team came out on top in tonight's game against the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton, beating them solidly 73-58. 

It was in the first 33 seconds of the game where the Highlanders took initiative in creating a 4 point lead. This 4 point lead was crucial to the outcome in the first half of the game. SUNY Canton tied the game with 2:43 remaining in the first half; turning out to be the only time the Kangaroos were able to put up a threat. The lead was quickly re-secured just over a minute later. The Highlanders beat the Kangaroos 35-30 at the end of the first half. 

In the first half Stephany Ellison (Whitesville, NY, Whitesville HS) led the way offensively by contributing with 7 points as well as 5 assists. Kristen Moose (Swain, NY, Canaseraga HS) also tied Ellison with 7 points in the first half. 

Yet again, in the second half Ellison led the way once more with 11 points, giving her a total of 18 points on the night. Maisie Pipher (Lowman, NY, Twin Tiers Christian) scored 8 points in the second half while Moose finished with 7 points in the second half, giving her 14 points on the night. 

Esther Webb (Houghton, NY, Fillmore Central HS) contributed greatly in just a time-span of 53 seconds in the second half. Esther scored on 3 layups (6 points), giving Houghton the biggest lead of the game. It was at this moment that the Highlanders went up 24 points over the Kangaroos. 

The Highlanders had an impression 10 steals in tonight's game. Of those steals, Christel Enriquez-Fisher (Colorado Springs, CO, William Mitchell HS) led the way with 3 steals.

Tonight's win over SUNY Canton has improved the Highlander's record to 4-5. The Highlanders are back in action on Friday, January 3rd where they will play at home against St. John Fisher College at 8:00pm.
