Alfred 100, Fredonia 90
The Alfred University men's basketball team improved to 4-1 (0-0 Empire 8) after earning a 100-90 victory over SUNY Fredonia, Tuesday evening.
           
Alfred took the lead (13-12) with 13:23 left in the first half when senior guard Tim Pacheco scored a layup. The Saxons built off that lead the rest of the way, holding a 47-36 halftime advantage, further sustaining it throughout the second half of play, edging the Blue Devils as time expired.
           
For the game, AU shot 42 percent from the field, 33 percent from the three-point line, and 56 percent from the charity stripe.
           
Junior guard Mike Snyder scored a team-high 18 points to pace the Saxons, shooting five-for-nine from the field and four-for-eight beyond the arc. Senior forward Jason Ruback, Pacheco, and freshman guard Tyler Seelman added 15, 11, and 12 points as well.
           
Senior center Steve Lothridge and junior guard Thomas Tsatsis pulled down nine and seven rebounds apiece.


Hartwick 86, Oneonta 78
The Hartwick men's basketball team outscored visiting Oneonta State 15-7 in overtime to come away with an 86-78 victory in front of a packed Lambros Arena crowd on Tuesday night. The win for the Hawks, which snaps a two-game winless streak, evens their record at 4-4 while the Red Dragons fall to 1-3.

Jared Suderley scored 21 points to lead the Hawks and had five of those points in the extra period to key the Hartwick victory. He also added nine rebounds and two steals. Kyle Bradley  added 17 points, nine boards and two steals. Mike Geisser scored 11 points and came away with three steals. Joey Lufkin had 10 points, three assists, and two steals.

Oneonta State was led by Zach Mager's 29 points. Dan Lee contributed 13 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. Mikey McElroy tacked on 10 points and three assists.

The Hawks got off to a fast start in the early stages of the first quarter as they took a 6-0 lead at 18:31. An 8-3 Red Dragon run, however, gave the visiting team a 10-9 advantage with 16:23 showing on the clock.

The two teams would tussle back and forth as there were three lead changes and three ties in just over four minutes of play. The Hawks would break the final tie at 11:35 on a jumper from Matt Petruccione that started a 13-5 run and gave 'Wick its biggest lead of the game, 32-24, with just over seven minutes to play in the first half.

The Hartwick lead stood at 34-26 with a little under five minutes remaining in the first stanza. 14-6 O-State run to close out the half gave the Red Dragons a 40-38 lead at halftime.  FULL STORY 


Houghton 80, Alfred State 58
Tyler McQuaid and Johnathan Stowe each recorded double-doubles to lead the Highlanders to an 80-58 win at Alfred State on Tuesday.

The Pioneers pushed the pace early and jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the game's first eight minutes. But the Highlanders settled into a rhythm offensively and slowly started to work their way back into the contest. Still trailing by eight (30-22) with 5:48 left in the first half, Houghton closed the half on a 16-4 run to take a 38-34 lead into the break.

The early minutes of the second half continued to work in the Highlanders' favor. After Chris Enlow sank two free throws with 11:53 left, the lead was 17. The Pioneers would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way, while the Highlanders upped the advantage to as many as 24 down the stretch.

McQuaid poured in 19 points and added 11 rebounds, while Stowe contributed 12 points and 10 boards off the bench. Brandon Camacho chipped in with 10 points and nine assists.

Houghton outrebounded the Pioneers, 54-44, and only committed 10 turnovers, while forcing 18 Pioneer miscues.


Cortland 79, Ithaca 63
The Ithaca College men's basketball team (2-4) lost to Cortland (3-0) Tuesday night, falling to the Red Dragons by a score of 79-63 in the Bombers' first home game of the season at Ben Light Gymnasium.

Sophomore Sam Bevan (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) led the way offensively for the Bombers, going 6-for-14 from the floor for a career-best 17 points. Senior Chris Jordan (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee)matched a season high with 14 points, while fellow senior Frank Mitchell (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) chipped in 12 points and 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Mitchell also led the team with two blocks and two steals.

Ithaca shot 41.1 percent from the floor, including a mark of 6-for-20 from three point range. The Bombers went 18-for-27 from the charity stripe.

After three ties and several lead changes to open the game, Cortland went on a run to jump out to a seven point lead just over nine minutes into the first half. The Bombers then went on a run of their own, recording 16-straight points to take a 25-16 lead with 6:52 left in the first frame. Ithaca's strong surge in the closing minutes of the stanza gave the Bombers a 37-29 lead heading into halftime.

Cortland came out on fire in the second half, shooting 57.7 percent from the floor including a mark of 7-for-10 from beyond the arc. The Red Dragons' hot shooting at the beginning of the frame chipped away at Ithaca's lead. Cortland tied the contest for the fifth time at 40-40 with 16:36 remaining in the second half.

Cortland eventually jumped out to an 11-point lead with 10 minutes left in the game and never looked back. Ithaca chipped away at the lead for the remainder of the game, but was never able to pull back, falling to the Red Dragons by a score of 79-63.
