KISSIMMEE, FL.-- The Highlanders' women's soccer team had a great run this afternoon in day 2 of the NCCAA National Championships, against the Cougars of Azusa Pacific University. Regardless of their efforts, the Highlanders came up one goal short, losing 2-1.

Highlander Stephany Ellison (Whitesville, NY, Whitesville HS) did not waste any time offensively, being the first to shoot on goal for either team. Ellison's shot on goal would be 1 of 3 Highlander shots on goal in the first half. Houghton did not manage to score in the first half. It was in the 33rd minute of the first half when the Cougars scored their first goal.

Senior Atalie Fite (Cincinnati, OH, Home School) tied up the game 17 minutes into the second half by gathering a deflected ball at the top of the box and firing it in the goal with her left foot.

Goalie Shawna Sprout (Portville, NY, Portville) had 6 saves on the game. Unfortunately one got past in the second half of the game, giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead. After the Cougar's second goal, the Highlanders had 13 minutes and 45 seconds left in the half to make something happen. With no shots on goal, the Highlanders were not able to claim the win.

While this loss marks the conclusion of the Highlanders' 2013 season, they can hold their heads up high with a 13-5-1 season record.
