Houghton Ends Season with 4-1 Loss to Campbellsville
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- In a game that was closer than the final score would indicate, #4 seed Houghton men's soccer lost 4-1 to #3 seed Campbellsville University in the final game of pool play at the NCCAA National Tournament on Wednesday.
When the day started, the two teams (both 0-1 in the tournament) were each in position to earn the wild card spot into Friday's semifinals, but a tie between Fresno Pacific and Lee University in the afternoon meant that Houghton and Campbellsville would be playing only for pride.
It was the Tigers who got on top first, tallying a goal in the 14th minute and adding an insurance goal just eight minutes later. Campbellsville took that 2-0 into the locker room after outshooting Houghton 7-5 in the opening 45 minutes.
The lead would be stretched to 3-0 just four minutes into the second half, but Houghton's
Landon Sheaffer (Richfield, PA, East Juniata) headed in a corner kick from
Paul Seddon (Wirral, England, Birkenhead Sixth Form) to get the Highlanders on the board in the 65th minute. The Tigers closed the scoring with a penalty kick in the 79th minute.
Houghton outshot Campbellsville 10-8 in the second half to make the shots even at 15 for the game. The Highlanders also had an 8-2 advantage in corners.
Keeper
Jacob Dunnett (Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Kennebecasis) made three saves in 85 minutes between the pipes.
Luke Ogden (Mechanicsburg, PA, Cumberland Valley) played the final five minutes in net and did not face a shot.
Houghton finishes the season with a record of 15-4-1. Campbellsville wraps up their campaign at 18-4-1.
