Cahill, Phillips and Rose Garner Individual E8 Honors
Stevens Institute of Technology senior Michael Cahill capped his stellar career with the 2013 Empire 8 Runner of the Year award. Ithaca freshman Sean Phillips adjusted to the collegiate competition with ease and was selected the Rookie of the Year. Utica Head Coach Jason Rose earned the coach of the year honor.
Cahill was the lone Empire 8 representative at the 2013 NCAA National Championships, where he finished 165
th out of 275. He was the first male runner in Stevens history to qualify or the championships with a seventh place finish at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals. Prior to regionals and nationals, Cahill became the first Stevens runner in E8 history to crossed the finish line first at the Empire 8 championship meet in a time of 25:36. The victory was a convincing one as he won by 48 seconds and ran a 19-second personal record on the Saratoga Springs course. On October 19, Cahill set the Stevens school record for an 8K at the Connecticut College Invitational in 25:19.
Phillips was the top rookie at the conference championship with a fourth-place finish (26:26) to lead the Bombers to their fourth straight Empire 8 team title. He narrowly missed all-region honors with a 38th-place finish out of 275 runners with a season best time of 26:03.30. He was Empire Eight Runner of the week three times
Rose earned the top-coaching award for the first time in his five seasons at the helm of the Pioneers. He guided Utica to its best finish in school-history at the 2013 E8 Championships as five UC student-athletes placed in the top 25 registering a score of 62 and a team-time of 26:52, just .10 off the champion Ithaca (44 points). Four Pioneers were named all-conference and three runners finished in the top 100 out of 275 competitors at the NCAA Atlantic Regional.
In addition to the top year-end awards, one member of each team was named that institution’s representative on the 2013 Men’s Cross Country Sportsman of the Year Team. Empire 8 emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen.
The first and second team all-conference teams were announced following the conclusion of the championship.
