Second day of competition at Ithaca Invitational

The Alfred, Hartwick, Ithaca and Nazareth men's swimming and diving teams concluded the second day of competition at the Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College on Saturday.

The men's morning was highlighted with second-place finishes in the 4x50-yard freestyle and the 4x100-yard freestyle relays. The team of
Peter Knight (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt),
John Carr (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster),
Addison Hebert (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) and Zach Kundel finished in a time of 1:24.29, just barely trailing Cornell (1:24.21) in the 50. The team of
Nick Warner (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery),
Lucas Zelehowsky (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn),
Taylor Van Cott(Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) and Knight took second in the 100, finishing in a time of 3:31.84.
Carr also earned a ninth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 1:46.91.
Zelehowsky secured an individual top-five finish in the first session of the day, taking fourth with a time of 50.81 in the 100-yard butterfly. Van Cott finished in a time of 51.77, earning seventh. Zelehowsky also took fourth in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in a time of 1:53.40.
The men placed seventh in the 1-meter dive, as Matthew Morrison finished with a score of 455.60.

In mid-season form, perhaps, Nazareth sophomore
Dan Burke turned in a school-record performance in the 100-yard backstroke Saturday to highlight the action as the Golden Flyers completed the second day of competition at the Bomber Invitational at the Ithaca College Aquatics Pavilion.
Burke posted a first-place time of :51.38 in the 100 backstroke, good for 32 team points, to lead Nazareth to sixth place in the 11-team field with 381 points. Division I Cornell is the runaway leader in the three-day competition, which concludes Sunday. The Big Red has 1667.5 through Saturday's second session. Ithaca is a distant second at 660.5, followed by Geneseo (619), Hartwick (564), Springfield (467) and Nazareth (381).
Burke's time was nearly three seconds faster than his previous best time this season and nearly a half a second faster than the record time of :51.77 he set at last season's Empire 8 Conference Championship meet.
Burke also competed in three relay events for the Golden Flyers. He swam with sophomores
Rob Ramos and
Sean Doyle and freshman
Matt Leverich to finish 11th in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:30.12. He also was in the 400 medley relay with Leverich and seniors
Tim Rappold and
Justin Sawran to finish sixth in 3:38.21. Then in Saturday's evening session, he swam again with Doyle, Sawran and Leverich in the 800 free relay that placed seventh in 7:15.60.
Sophomore diver
Jeff Green also broke his own school record in the 1-meter diving competition as he placed fifth with a score of 474.90 for 11 dives. He broke his previous mark of 466.75, set last February. Rappold also took down a 14-year-old school record to place eighth in the 100 breaststroke. His time of :59.35 broke the previous mark of :59.43, held by Randy Lewis since 1999. He also placed ninth in the 400 IM (4:16.26) and Leverich was 16th in the 200 freestyle (1:48.34).

Two Saxon relay teams placed third and several members of the Alfred University men's swimming and diving team performed well in individual events in Saturday's second day of competition at the Ithaca College Invitational, held over three days this weekend.
The AU team of juniors Dave Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port), Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) and
Dave Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and senior Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) were third in the 200-yard free relay (1:25.58), while Toth, junior Joe Rogers (Dublin, NH), Coombes and Sowinski were third in the 800-yard free relay (7:06.75).
Coombes was fifth in the 200 free (1:445.60) and 13
th in the 100 back (55.60); Sowinski was eighth in the 200 free (1:46.15); Rogers was 17
th in the 200 free (1:48.67); and Toth was 10
th (53.02) and 15
th (1:59.57), respectively, in the 100 and 200 butterfly.
The team of Coombes, senior
Terry Soto (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris), Toth and Sowinski was ninth in the 400 medley relay (3:42.42).
